I've booked the flights. Wasn't just the price change that was a gamble it was also the flight lengths, if these flights sold out then it jumped from 16 hour travel time to 30.
So booked flight only for Bangkok 31st March to 14th April. Now I need to research hotels and modes of travel.
Flights cost £1787 for 3 of us from Manchester with Emirates.0 -

Here is a hotel in Bangkok that I enjoyed: probably the cheapest possible hotel with a really large pool. My review is dated 19 July.

And here is an affordable and peaceful place that is close to the centre of everything:

Thank you so much, I will check these out0 -
I wouldn't stay on the 'wrong' side of the Chao Phraya river unless the hotel was close to where I wanted to spend most of my time.0

When getting around by Skytrain, crossing the river is just like any other bit of the journey (except that a change is usually necessary since the line that crosses the river doesn't go to most of the places of interest), so not a big disadvantage. When getting around by bus or taxi the bridges tend to be clogged with traffic, but so do most of the roads, so again not a specially big deal.
I would avoid the places that are a long way from the Metro or Skytrain, since when there is bad traffic you are really trapped there.0 -
A bit of both. I would chose somewhere close to transport links, especially the river.
If on a tight budget, New Siam 2 is not a bad choice. Convenient for river travel(a must do when in Bangkok) as Phra Athit Pier is close. Chao Phraya express boat(Orange Flag) from there will take you to all of the old city sites/sights for 14 baht(32p) per journey. 150 baht(£3.34) per day on a dedicated Tourist boat. I don't bother with the Tourist boat.
The Chao Phraya express boat(Orange Flag) can also take you to the Sathorn Pier wherein you can connect to Saphan Taksin BTS in order to travel to other parts of the city.
If happy to spend more, I would recommend staying close to Saphan Taksin BTS, as then you are in the ideal location for both city and river travel.
In this case, my choice would be Centrepoint Silom. A minute to get to BTS Saphan Taksin or a couple more to get to the Sathorn Pier.
Sits atop a shopping mall and supermarket, so very convenient for shopping too.0 -
NiftyD....
New Siam have a new addition in the same area. It's called New Siam Palace View. We're kicking-off there for 3 nights in February before getting the train to Kanchanaburi. Costs about £22 for a double, got a pool too.0 -

To get an idea of the location, use this map.
New Siam 2 is indicated, whilst Palace View is on Rong Mai alley(Trok Rong Mai) 3 cms down on the map.
The Phra A(r)thit Pier is indicated above and to the right of New Siam 2. Info for the OP as I'm sure you already know.0
