I would still do the 3 nights in Bangkok at the start It is a great city with plenty to see. You can then enjoy the peaceful places afterwards. I have been to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai and enjoyed them. It is much cheaper than Bangkok and Phuket with great shopping. Lots of tours you can do during the day, not too far away. Phuket is fine, but not Patong. There are other nice resorts there though. Plenty to do.travelover0

Best if you state location and dates in the first instance. Not too many mind readers here.
I get £534.......perhaps the NiftyDigits/FunTime promotion code is in play again.:)0 -

Sorry flying from Manchester to Bangkok on the 31st March0 -
Another vote for spending the first 3 nights in Bangkok, and definitely your final night.
Location is important too, ideally close to either a BTS [skytrain] station, a MRT [Underground] station, or Public Ferry pier. this wesite covers all the public transport optios [click on the blue band at the op of the page for the one you want]...

A few must-do things on a first visit are...
- A trip up the Chao Phraya river on a orange flag public ferry all the way to Nonthaburi. The river is the heartbeat of Bangkok, and the one hour trip passes some great sights. Get the ferry back, get off at Pier 13 close to Khao San Road, have a bite to eat at one of the dozens of inexpensive restaurants.
- A wander round Lumphini Park. It's the one big open space in a mad city, with always plenty going on...

- Visit the Siam Ocean World Aquarium to escape the heat for a couple of hours...

- Eat street food with the locals. If a stall is busy then that's the sign to look for. Loads of videos on You Tube.
Personally, for a few days in the countryside I'd spend them in Kanchanaburi. It's easy to reach from Bangkok by train, and a train ride is a proper Thai experience. Details here, and things to do...

And a short You Tube video of the train...

You could spend your beach time in Hua Hin.0 -
I stayed at the Rembrandt, it didn't disappoint!
Loved Chiang Mai & would go back as 3 nights wasn't enough for us.
We also stayed at Regent Chalet Regent Beach in Cha Am Hua Hin for 8 nights. The grounds were lovely, although the rooms were nothing special but they were adequate. But 8 nights by the beach was a bit too long for me.0 -
