My sentiments (and with the OP too)

When I go from Shrewsbury to Stoke, Tom Tom takes me along the A53 all the way
On the way back, it diverts me off the main road to follows single track country lane, then back onto the A53!

    Go figure!!

    :(

LOL... A53 North of Shawbury around Hodnet/Wollerton? My old Garmin i3 used to do that.

I knew where i was going and that it was straight up the A53 but one day thought lets see where its going to take me.

Turn left off the A53, down the road a bit and then turn right and come out about 500 yards further up to where you turned off.

Total waste of time, guessing if you draw a straight line then that road appears to be shorter, but if set to shortest time it should know not to turn off.

but then I remembered that I'm required to carry registration papers inside the car anyway.
A thief can just get my address from there.
You should never leave address ID inside your car. Your insurance certificate is fine as it only has your name and the car registration number.

Part of my 'holiday packing' routine is to 'anonymise' my car before leaving home, ie checking that there is nothing inside that bears my address. Especially if I'm leaving it on a airport car park for a fortnight.

TomTom used to have a PIN protection, so then it was OK to put in your 'Home' address. The more recent models don't bother, so my satnav doesn't have a 'Home' location recorded.

They say you shouldn't use your own address in your satnav anyway for security if it is stolen,

The problem is when the home address is given a name like "Home" or "Home Address".
  • My 'home address' is the turn-off from the main road into the housing estate. I can manage from there...:)

On my TomTom, I just put the nearest village as 'Home' and then set next door's address as one of my favourites.

Nope, much further into Staffordshire ...
Heading South East from 'Stoke', when you get to Baldwin's Gate, it tells you to turn left onto a country road, then right onto the A51, but then, just before you rejoin the A53, it sends you down Wharmadine Lane (a single track country lane) then back onto the A53

    Lord knows why!! :)

It isn't so bad when they give rubbish instructions near home or on familiar routes - the real problem is when they take you on roads like this one ..

    satnav.jpg

.. or worse still the same quality of road with 10 foot hedges either side all to cut a corner on main roads.

Outdated traffic reports can also lead to wild goose chases.

Their main advantage seems to be in avoiding the inevitable rows about partner's navigational skills when relying on them for map reading.

You take you on roads like that, it's not mandatory to follow the voice or on screen graphics.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Amusingly, I know the farmer who lives along Wharmadine Lane mentioned in my earlier post.
In the severe snowy winter a few years ago, he reported a car stuck along there for several days with the snow covering the car completely. The (not local) driver had followed his sat nav!!
