VPNs absolutely do offer lots more protection against unwarranted surveillance of internet activities. I'm not going to give the step-by-step as I don't really want to help the kind of people who might benefit (note: basic VPN will offer your every day citizens ample protection, a few tweaks will protect those downloading torrents etc), but it's relatively straightforward to create am environment through dedicated servers, VPNs, network routing, encryption etc that is essentially confidential and impenetrable for a closed group of people to communicate over.

Of course as soon as you connect to a "public" service - one not limited to a group of people you "personally" know - your actions become less confidential. But again, the only people who would care about this level of exposure are looking to do some serious harm. So, personally, I don't care to help them by explaining further.

I strongly disagree. I am looking for as much privacy as possible, as due to the WikiLeaks reveals I am aware of how much Western governments spy on citizens. You are naïve if you trust the Government to be the "good guys" with only their citizens' best interests at heart.

So we'll all start using Tor.... job done.

And what about if the Government starts demanding your real IP to identify you, to allow you access to the (heavily controlled) internet?

Exactly what code says - this law won't affect the people it is claimed to be targeting. VPNs, Tor, anonymous proxies etc. provide the means around it. It doesn't mean that those people can't still be nabbed but it won't be due to the IPA.

And when added to the censorship enforcing Digital Economy Bill, I think people have genuine reason to be concerned at what's happening. Even if you do trust this government and do believe that any fears about data security and misuse are unfounded, are you certain you'll trust the next one, or the one after that?

We're building a foundation where invasive measures and state-censorship is normalised. It doesn't take much once you establish that for an authoritarian-leaning government to move the goalposts and to expand the reach of the IPA to increase the number of years, or to log pages visited as well, or for the DEB to be expanded to include other potentially "harmful" material or subjects.

Precisely. And I don't trust this Government at all.

People are supposed to control the government, not the government control the people. People have become so far removed from the understanding of democracy that they don't understand how !!!!ed up the current situation is.

Lambyr sums up my feelings on this. I don't agree with it and I don't trust the ISPs and govt depts to look after this data. There are not many places that hackers cant crack. Lambyr also made a good point re they will be asking for more detail and longer logs before you know it. The press will have a field day if this info is leaked and they get their hands on it. There are so many implications here. Does everyone know what content is being surfed in their household? A lot of people do but what about guests and inquisitive teens? What happens if I visit a far right website? Will i be flagged as a extremist? Just to be clear I don't have far right views but I have visited a couple of sites in my time out of curiosity.
