We've always used Imperial Leather but find that doesn't last like it used to.
Imperial Leather definitely isn't as good as it used to be; Mr LW has used that for years, and he reckons they've changed the formula somehow. The little label never used to fall off, either, and it frequently does these days.

I always get "artisan" soaps from craft fairs etc, as anything made commercially seems to irritate my skin - they generally don't seem too bad for mushiness; but I do keep a stock in the house (they live in my underwear drawer) so they're often fairly old by the time they get used - don't know if that makes a difference.

I have olive hand soap (bought abroad) on a wire rack and it's fine.

DH uses Simple in the shower and that's not a problem on a rack either although he uses it up fairly quickly.

Well lots of thoughts similar to mine from you all ! Imperial Leather being the worst culprit as well Ha Ha ! I will try Dove and Pears was always nice but again a new formula I'm sure. I do remember my mum had the soap magnet, so clever I'd forgotten that. So I've just been to buy a Waitrose essentials vegetable hand soap and we'll give that a go . Will report back. Thanks for all your ideas.

    . By why the magnet???

There was / is agadget that has a magnet and a metal holer. You screw holder to wall and stick magnet in the soap

bung soap, magnet side up, on the metal holder so soap is suspended in fresh air

Not seen one for ages but they were all the rage once upon a time

Jamaican shops sell carbolic soap, this is still made properly, I keep meaning to get a few bars.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

That's the thingummy - ours isn't as aerodynamically shaped & there is all sorts of bad language used if the bit of metal you press into the soap gets lost but that keeps the soap away from the accidental wet & improves its useful life.

If you have a TK Maxx nearby, sometimes they have Dr Bronner soap bars, even discounted they are a bit pricey (I bought a batch at around £2 each) but they last forever, they are 100% natural, there is no plastic in the package and you can use them for so many things, hair, body, dishes, clothes, they are really worth buying them if you find them. One bar lasts me a few months in the shower, in place of shower gel and sometimes shampoo (but I have short hair, not sure with long hair how it would work). They come in several natural fragrances.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
