The update process is a huge problem for Vista which I've recently experienced for the first time. The scale of it I found out be fairly extensive after research. Apparently the update searcher can hang for hours before it properly activates. There's more info here: https://www.askwoody.com/2016/how-to-update-vista-quickly/

I've just installed a Security Update for Windows Vista (KB3168965) and I'll see if that's a fix.

    For 32 bit: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53206

    For 64 bit: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53242

I've been pretty happy with Vista for years but I'll be back in the UK in a few weeks and give my old 17" HP Presario to my grandkids for watching videos and treat myself to an HP Envy with W10 for Xmas.
It just does the same as the built in update function.

Thanks for this. I notice if one looks at answer 17 of the Ask Woody page this is shown....

Hi, I couldn’t get Vista to update on two laptops until I found http://www.wsusoffline.net/ which is software to download all the updates/ service packs from Microsoft to your pc, then install all the updates your system needs, offline. It also does win 7 and 8. Vista is listed under legacy products.

I don’t use windows update anymore, I just run wsus offline to keep up to date.

    Hope this helps.

Can anybody please suggest where to look to find the "legacy products" ?
  • i can do a manual check and it just goes through the motions of looking but never finds anything and doesnt even say sorry theres nothing available. it just keeps going and going.
    I have the same problem.

Go to http://download.wsusoffline.net/ , towards the top right below 'most recent version', click on 01.12.2016 Version 10.8.1, download, it's a .zip file, so need to unzip then open the folder and run by clicking 'Update generator', it will open with 3 tabs, one of which is 'legacy products', tick x86 or x64 box depending whether you're on 32bit or 64 bit Vista, then 'Start'.
It will update but will not cure the core problem. HTH
    Move along, nothing to see.

    Thank you, will try it.
    I'm getting Update Generator.au3, also
    Update Generatoe.exe
Cant open au.3, however if .exe, presented with choice of (1) extracting all or (2) running.
Not sure what to do. Sorry for my lack of certainty in this.

You could select 'Extract' but I prefer to do it the full way.
I think you may have missed some steps. :)
    Right click the downloaded folder.
Left click 'Extract All', follow the instructions to extract.
A new window will open containing yet another folder called 'wsusoffline', open that folder, double click 'UpdateGenerator'.
Now refer back to my previous post.

Sorry Spud, all sorts of problems with my AV and Windows not allowing it or not able to find.
I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and shortly buy a new PC. I don't think I'll ever get updates again. In the meantime, I do have the provision of the Kaspersky vulnerability scan (thanks donnajunkie) so I can use that to check my system to tell me if there are any problems.
    Thank you.

    You were nearly there!
Repeat what you did earlier, when it gets to the extracting or running try 'running'.
    Move along, nothing to see.
