The active x version relates to Internet Explorer and even though it's on my computer I never use it, preferring Opera and Firefox, and Flash Player is up to date on both those browsers.:)

Yes but isn't the vulnerability still a risk to the system even if you dont use ie? So it's a choice between updating and just removing flash player altogether which the other browsers do use.

If I open the computers control panel (classic view) and click on Flash Player, it comes up with Flash Player settings manager. If I then click on updates I'm presented with.....

Active x version - not installed
    NPAPI plug in version 23.0.0.207
    PPAPI plug in version 23.0.0.207

As far as I'm aware the PPAPI is for Opera, and the NPAPI is Firefox
The Kaspersky vulnerability scan showed the active x as a critical issue, but once I had removed it and done another scan, no vulnerabilities were shown, so I'm presuming the other two are OK, although I realise with Flash Player you can never be too careful.

AndyPix have you tried this fix?
    Did it work for you?

I've recently been on the sick and off work for 5 weeks, due to boredom and for the hell of it I installed Vista Home Premium SP2 in a VM, ran into the 'no updates/100% cpu/svchost' problem.
That solution didn't work for me, I've kept rolling back the VM and spent hours reading and trying 'solutions'.
    Still no updates.
It's even worse than the Win 7 updates debacle.:)
    Move along, nothing to see.

Maybe it's ok then. I was thinking if you had an out of date version still on there or simply chose to get rid of flash player altogether(no other type of flash either).

Notice this dates from 2010. Installing updates wasn't a problem then, seems far, far worse now. Strangely reassuring that the problem afflicts Windows 7 too, although makes me feel guilty that I should feel comfort from others problems.
The people behind Windows really are a load of b***ards in my opinion.
  • Hi,
I also have that and the last update I got was in July.

I get updates every month, sometimes twice a month, last lot 19/11.

Have you checked your update settings?

The update process is a huge problem for Vista which I've recently experienced for the first time. The scale of it I found out be fairly extensive after research. Apparently the update searcher can hang for hours before it properly activates. There's more info here: https://www.askwoody.com/2016/how-to-update-vista-quickly/

I've just installed a Security Update for Windows Vista (KB3168965) and I'll see if that's a fix.

    For 32 bit: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53206

    For 64 bit: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53242

I've been pretty happy with Vista for years but I'll be back in the UK in a few weeks and give my old 17" HP Presario to my grandkids for watching videos and treat myself to an HP Envy with W10 for Xmas.
You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

I think Win7 is slightly different in that it will eventually update.
Plenty of solutions, the only consistent fix is to let it run, once it was 22hrs. :)
    No such luck with Vista.
AndyPix has not been back, so guess he just used Google to find that solution.
