Hi Guys and thank you for your responses. My partner and I have been in this house for over 14 years as we couldn't afford to buy. We still couldn't afford at the price the council have offered now even with the discount. We wouldn't want to move as we are settled here but we would like to buy it so we can renovate it. The council invests a bare minimum in the standard of its property. I guess we will carry on renting and wait for the bubble to burst once more.
It's your home; you have been living there for 14 years on a low rent. You're one of the most secure tenants in the UK, protected by your lifetime tenancy.
You state you have no intention of moving so YOU do the renovations. I would guess you are talking about a new kitchen, bathroom etc. YOU carry out the work to the standard you want then live in the house, enjoying low rents for the rest of your natural.
Stop expecting everything on a plate.0 -
If you can't afford to buy, I'd say crack on and do the improvements you want.
Presumably, as its a council property, they cannot give you 2 months notice to vacate? If so, you have probably the most secure tenure compared with most people.
With all due respect, if you and your partner combined cannot afford to buy it at the higher price (?£110k) then I would suggest that you're not in a very strong position to buy a property.
Even more reason that you should just be grateful for your secure tenure in a council property.0
