You don't actually need to buy this house to own a house do you? You could buy one for less in Leeds and leave the house you have for someone else to rent who can't afford a private rental or can't afford to buy anything. Don't you think that would be fairer? Also you should be able to find one that is cheaper on the open market that you can more easily afford. The discounts under Right to Buy were for people who couldn't afford to buy on the open market but you can so you don't need the discount. If you buy this house that will be one less house that the council will have available for someone who has nowhere to live.

Newbie Gareth can't be that interested in the replies as he vanished immediately after posting.

Call me suspicious but I suspect "Gareth" is not real. I wonder if he'll return.

Starting? We've been rehearsing for a couple of months, and the performances are next weekend...

    (Oh, no, he isn't)
  • Ha ha is this a joke?

With RTB surely you are getting a hefty discount anyway.

The housing market has moved on somewhat in the last 2 years, get with the program, you're lucky it has only gone up 20k or so- that's absolutely nothing compared with other places!

It does seem strange that private sale houses are being sold more cheaply than RTB stock, though....

Can I get a 40% discount on my house at your expense please???

  • Hi Guys and thank you for your responses. My partner and I have been in this house for over 14 years as we couldn't afford to buy. We still couldn't afford at the price the council have offered now even with the discount. We wouldn't want to move as we are settled here but we would like to buy it so we can renovate it. The council invests a bare minimum in the standard of its property. I guess we will carry on renting and wait for the bubble to burst once more.

Is there anything stopping you from doing that work now? What work are you looking at - I'm presuming you're not talking about major changes like an extension, simply for cost reasons, and the council should have done basics like windows and wiring, while AIUI decor is a tenant's responsibility anyway, isn't it?

Housing Revenue Accounts are self financing, its other rent paying council tenants that are 'subbing' the sale of council houses isn't it?
