  • I switched over on the 9/10th November to a new supplier. GB still took money out of my account on the 14th November and i was allready £173 in credit and have still not got anything back ,Tried to contact them last week no reply. Makes you think about changing to new unknown suppliers.

If you left by the 10th and were in credit, it seems clear a payment on the 14th was an error. Assuming it was a direct debit, you can report the error to your bank and the bank is obliged by the direct debit guarantee to refund the payment to your account. It then becomes their problem to recover the money from GB. So try giving your bank a call.

Many, many thanks for trying but these are the exact people who cut my meter off (0800 111 999). They are gas leak emergency people. Although kind, they said there was nothing they could do to help because they do not have a contract with GB Energy.TEARING MY HAIR OUT! Family arriving from abroad for Christmas. Praying that MSE will come up with some advice.

Thinking back, I once had a gas leak from my boiler, I can't remember if I called the supplier who passed it on or the emergency service first but they came out and like you all they did was turn it off. As far as they are concerned it was made safe and they were no longer involved.

I contacted a registered gas engineer who came, fixed the boiler and was able to just turn the supply back on checking all was OK.

I would ring a reputable Gas Engineer on Monday and ask advice.

Rubbish advice from MSE on not cancelling your DD because the new supplier might need it. Cancel your DD now. You may well get the money back eventually, but that could be months. Any DD for a new supplier would need setting up separately.
Considering my previous post about being CUT OFF and with no idea how to fix things, I am too scared of cancelling my DD :(

Brilliant advice! In all this stress, this possible solution did not occur to me. Many, many thanks indeed!

Of course if the meter itself is faulty and needs replacing they may not be able to help, but if its a connection around the meter they probably can.
  • I switched to GB Energy.

Today, a leak was discovered on my meter and an emergency engineer cut my supply off.
Trying to get this sorted out, I found out that GB Energy has gone bust TODAY (can one imagine worse luck?!) and there is no one to contact to get my meter changed and my gas supply restored. I am, apparently, protected by Ofgem and they are supposed to contact me, in due course, time unknown. Unfortunately, they do not know that my supply has been cut off as an emergency measure and they might not be in any rush to get in touch. I AM DESPERATE. What do I do now?! HELP!

Some of the smaller suppliers, despite requirements don't have a PEMS (meter exchange) contract with the National Grid or your local gas distributor. In most areas, bar hydro, LBSL I believe was GB Energy's contracted meter engineers and would book emergency jobs for Meter Exchanges.

I don't work for GB (thankfully), but if your distrubtor wont' swap the meter, then perhaps you could call Lowri and see if they'll do anything, as no doubt it's going to be neigh-on-impossible to get a hold of GB Energy on Monday. I'm afraid if it's the meter, then you'll need an supplier meter engineer, but if it's only an broken appliance - then this may not be a problem.

Good luck and hope heating is restored to your property soon :)
Thank you all for helping me make my day by saving money!

Sooo kind of you to respond! I have already emailed Lowri Beck and hope they'll answer. If not, I'll call them on Monday.
It is not a faulty appliance but a leak at/around/in the meter. The new SUPPLIER engineer would be great but how do I find out who are they now?

If you've got a leak, ring the emergency number, don't muck about with the supplier whether they've gone bust or not.

We had a leak quite few years ago and the gas company were on site and sorted it out within a couple of hours. A leak is an explosion risk, so get it sorted out
