Would you have a Contactless Credit card or Just Use Chip & PIn ?

For people who have told me that that they're unsafe such as my mum used to, my counter argument was that you could have £100 in your wallet, if it gets stolen, you've lost £100. At least with a contactless card if you had your wallet stolen, you have a limit of £30 and after so many purchases, it asks you for your pin anyway. If anything happens then your bank can refund you.
They wouldn't do that losing £30 or even £100 worth of cash..
My mum hated the idea of contactless a few years ago, but she just got a new Halifax card and didn't even know it was contactless until I told her. She was still using chip and pin until I kept reminding her she could use contactless. And she does now. I heard her telling somebody in a restaurant or somewhere the other week that she never trusted it but now loves it..0 -
I disable the contactless function on any card I can't get without it. I have no desire to walk around carrying an RFID tag allowing me to be identified and tracked like cattle that have them riveted to their ears.
Probably isn't happening yet but it will, some advertising twonk will decide that identifying you as you walk into superdrug will let them display targeted advertising reminding you to stock up on preparation H or incontinence pants or something.
I don't want crooks to be able to scan my card details wirelessly.
I don't want to walk into a shop and hand over my wallet telling the shopkeeper to take what they need then have to get on the internet (possibly having to wait 3 days) to make sure they did only take what they needed.
Mostly I just don't want this rubbish technology that shouldn't even exist. Multiple cards interfere with each other so you will have to take the card out or keep them in separate containers. The time saving does not come from contactless it comes from not having to enter a PIN and wait for communications with the bank to verify it.
Why couldn't we have just had "chip & nothing" for purchases less that £30? Chip & Pin terminals could have had that option built in from the start - would have cost nothing and has none of the problem of contactless.
Edit: realised I sort of missed the original question. I don't have any (still functioning) contactless cards and consider anyone using contactless to not be 'in' but ignorant or foolish.0 -
Hasdogs' post above states that he disables the contactless function on his cards............ How do you do this?0

The cards have an internal loop antenna, x-ray of a typical card in this link.

A making a small nick in the surface with a craft knife is enough to cut the loop and disable the antenna. Trouble is knowing exactly where to cut and if it worked. For some cards you can see the loop if you backlight with a bright source (LED torch or phone perhaps). Android phones with NFC and an app can read information from the cards which is a way to test without trying to use the card. I am am engineer and have a dip meter which detects and roughly locates such loops.0 -
Do you also shop wearing a balaclava?I disable the contactless function on any card I can't get without it. I have no desire to walk around carrying an RFID tag allowing me to be identified and tracked like cattle that have them riveted to their ears.

Now I know everyone has their own views on this, but is contactless such a big deal ?, is it not considered the ‘In Thing’ if you don’t pay by contactless now and use chip in pin, which is admittedly slower.
If you have a Nationwide account you can add several NW cards including credit cards to ApplePay and use it as contactless. Also there is no £30 limit using them this way.

Yes but having contactless cards would surely make the purchasing of tinfoil that much easier? :beer:0 -
i just use whichever card is most beneficial to me.. which is a combination of a TSB Debit card, an Amex Credit card and an Asda Credit card.. all of which are contactless, and i pay by contactless unless the purchase is above £30. [i only ever make contactless purchases with the TSB card - otherwise they don't generate cashback].
of my 10 debit cards, one is not contacless enabled. but other than the TSB card i mention above i never use them for purchases anyway.0
