I'm not a builder, but have had an account with Travis Perkins 'in town' for around 10 years
It's quite handy to have when doing any 'project' for ourselves or one of our family.Moneyineptitude wrote: »Those credit facilities are, of course, historic and will have been granted during the "easy credit" boom. They are also subject to interest if not paid off each month.
Travis Perkins (along with similar retailers) do not easily offer such facilities to non-Trade professionals these days.
There is no Consumer Right to credit and Cash On Delivery is rather a thing of the past.
OK
Our daughter has an account with Buildbase which she took out a couple of years ago, when she was renovating her house.
She was in her first year of employment on a one year contract.

Let's finish this aspect of the thread which is sidelining the main discussion.
In my particular circumstances, the builders' merchants were aware I would be making several large purchases, but on no occasion was I offered an account with them. As they were going to give me a 20% discount on all purchases, this may have been the reason it wasn't offered. The merchants are local/regional but are a major player where I live.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -

Regardless, the retailer has already agreed to accept a payment of 90% prior to delivery and the OP seems to have accepted this despite his misgivings.
I still think it was unreasonable for the OP to assume that payment other than the deposit would not be required until the goods arrived at his home.
Unless otherwise agreed, payment & delivery are to be concurrent conditions.
So perhaps - given OP said nothing was otherwise agreed - it was perfectly reasonable for the OP to assume it would be due on delivery?
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
I know of many granted such accounts up to a few years ago.Our daughter has an account with Buildbase which she took out a couple of years ago, when she was renovating her house.
Staff were tasked with opening as many new accounts as possible and many many such unprofitable credit accounts were opened.
It's definitely not so easy now...0
