I tried to use a machine. It didn't like the cheque - despite it being a printed version from Lloyds Bank...
Why they didn't do a BACS payment I don't know. But then there was outcry when there was a suggestion of geting rid of cheques wasn't there?0 -

You can photo cheques now and add them to your account. Brave new world.....0 -

With the Halifax?"There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

In 2016? How many cheques per year does the typical customer get? I think I probably write about one a year and pay in a couple a decade. Why would I use one?But then there was outcry when there was a suggestion of geting rid of cheques wasn't there?
Not enough to make people actually use them.0 -

Meanwhile, back in the 21st century, cheques are dead. I wouldn't do business with a company or tradesman that wanted to be paid by cheque, partly because I don't know where my old cheque book is, but mostly because why bother dealing with someone living in the past?
I've only been subject to fraud twice in forty years of having a bank account: both involved cheques.
unfortunately I sometimes get paid money owed by cheque and have to visit a branch. Pre printed cheques when read by Halifax's wonderful automated machines show the value as £0.00
Twice I have been persuaded to leave the queue and use the machine, this has happened bot times so now I refuse. Because you loose your place in the queue the staff member takes you to the front and you get the next available teller which further angers those who waited patiently and makes you feel uncomfortable.
Having said all that I have banked with Barclays (abysmal) Lloyds (terrible) Nat West (the fees are a good laugh for a business) and they are all as bad as each other pretty much. Halifax is the least awful so far for me, but if they minimize counter service I'll need to look elsewhere.
The only drawbacks to doing everything electronically are that your customers don't always think the same way, and that you can be locked out very easily, by technical failure, password problems or the whim of the bank.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Why would you do this?
It's called saving!!!
I empty my pockets every night and it goes into bags. When the bags are full, off they go to the bank and into the savings account.
The theory being that you don't miss loose change. Yesterday alone provided £7.70. Two £2 coins, 2 x £1, 3 x 50p and 1 x 20p. It works well for me."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

I don't carry cash. So the contents of my pockets would be, er, nothing.
I do however have my debit card set up to round every transaction up to the nex pound and pay the difference into a separate account. So I do exactly what you do, with no bags, no trips to the bank, and my trouser pockets don't wear out.0 -
In the business world cheques are certainly not dead. Many businesses still issue cheques and so do public services.0
