temperature symbol on car

Hi Guys

Today I was on the way to work in stop start traffic(as normal) and a red symbol came on which is next to hand brake on symbol, its a temperature over little swiggle like water/wave. I was just around the corner from work so got to work ok, I have a ford ka which is 2003 year old. could this be I may need water? I didn't check when I got to work as I know you shouldn't really open the bonnet when you have used your car and I had driven for almost 1hour.

  • Check your handbook which will tell you what the symbol is, but it does sound like it's the coolant temperature. What level was the coolant when you last checked it, and when was that?

Do not drive it until you have established what it is, else you may do irreparable damage to your engine.
  • Hi

Best check in your car's handbook? On some cars, this warning light can indicate water is needed in the radiator (once cooled down, you should be able to see the level in the expansion bottle (with the yellow filler cap)). It could also indicate that the temperature has got too high (lack of water?).

I have seen cars where the same warning light covers the windscreen washer level - although this is usually an amber warning.

Check though, or get it checked, before driving far, as you don't want to cause serious damage to the engine.

    Good luck

Or there was a device you could use to find the answer to any question you wanted, that just happened to have a search function too...

It's Fiesta rather than Ka but it does indeed sound like the symbol you describe is an Engine coolant temperature warning.

Check coolant level or coolant temperature too high. Does it have a temperature gauge?

No temp gauge only on the water level in engine, just topped it up now and Reyes to start and didn't starts straight away but started just and the symbol is not there. I noticed that there now seemed to be a little vibration on steering wheel when I pulled forward to test but the went off. I will ring to book in for them to ha e a quick look and see if anything is needed doing on car.
  • You may want to consider fixing this ongoing situation with temperature/smoke/steam/brokenness on your Ka.

Sounds like its not fixed if its losing water.

I hope you topped up with antifreeze and not water. Otherwise your going to be looking for a new car very soon.
