It doesn't change while the tyre's fitted...

but the tyres were already fitted when i bought my car

I went looking for the date code and it is on the inside of the tyres so it cant be easily read

if i have new tyres fitted during my ownership i could check the date code and make a note of it before the wheels go on

Does the date code matter? Some two year-old tyres can show sidewall cracking whereas some ten year-olds can look as good as new. Date alone doesn't mean much and ageing will depend on materials used and how it has been stored. If the tyre is fitted, how it ages depends on how it is maintained and used e.g. thrashed around corners and kept out in all weathers or the occasional trip to the shops and kept in a cosy garage.

the date on the tyres is a bit like "dream" beds , made on xx.xx.xxxx

    Not really.
Tyres have the date of manufacture on them where as dreams beds have the date of delivery to the customer. (I know this as I had a new mattress from Dreams a couple of weeks ago).

Thought this might be of interest to some. Found the spare on my car is original as date is 2001!

If it's always been out of the sun inside the boot it will have aged a lot more slowly than a tyre on the outside of the car.

I was advised by an engineer friend, who didn't stand to gain anything, that tyres should be discarded after five years, whatever the wear on them. Was he wrong? Apparently they start to perish after a while.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

After 5 years you should be paying special attention to the state of your tyres but that doesn't mean they need to be scrapped regardless. Most of the manufacturers will state 10 years as the maximum lifespan.
