How old are your tyres?

I saw a post a few weeks ago where it didn't appear to be common knowledge that you can see the age of the tyres on your car from the date code on the sidewall.

Thought this might be of interest to some. Found the spare on my car is original as date is 2001!

Industry standard is not to sell tyres older than five years from manufacture. Many online retailers will list tyres older than a couple of years old separately, with the manufacture date specified - and the price reduced.
  • My car developed an issue of grounding out on speedbumps/slopes it never used to.
A puncture highlighted crazing on the flat tyre.
On inspecting the other 3, I noticed the other one on the same axle had fine crazing on the sidewall as well.
They were 9 year old michelins, on the car when I bought it at the start of the year.

It has changed the way I think about tyres, previously I wouldn't have bothered about dates.

the tyres on my car has the date code on the inside of the tyre so you have to take the wheel off or get under the car with a torch to look for the date code

how old is to old some say six years some say ten years some say as long as the tyre has legal tread depth and no signs of visible cracking or perishing then they are ok

there is no hard and fast rules for tyre age on passenger cars in the uk and tyre retailers will use this uncertainty to scare people into changing tyres that should be perfectly safe

It doesn't change while the tyre's fitted...

6yrs is a bit on the over-cautious side.
"So long as it's legal and not cracking" is ridiculously lax.
    10yrs is probably about right.
