How soon after eating the first one were you ill ?

Normally it takes a while for someone to be ill after eating something.

We are assuming the OP bought the chocolates recently but they could have bought them months ago, they do say they "purchased" which could be taken to mean recently.

Id take the offer of £3 and leave it at that.

I purchased a box of Cadburys Roses and there is a problem with all of the sweets in the box in as much that they are all either like powder and crumbly or rock hard like bricks. I thought I'd try a couple of them, both tasted awful and I was quite ill after eating them.

I've used the Resolver tool to complain to Cadburys and all they have offered me is £3.00 which was exactly the cost of the chocolates.

I wrote back saying £3.00 was an insult especially after being ill but this has been ignored and I've escalated it via Resolver to the highest level now.

I'm just wondering if Cadburys continue to ignore me or offer me nothing else is there anywhere where I can go with this now? I still have all the chocolates. Trading standards???

I am seeking some degree of compensation for the illness suffered.

Can anybody advise me if they have had similar issues with purchasing food that made them ill and where they took it?
How much money do you think is appropriate to compensate you for your experience?

OP, your claim for a refund of the purchase price is with the shop you purchased the chocolates from, not Cadburys (probably not stored properly during summer months in the shop). Unless you have an intolerance or underlying health issue you are unlikely to have been made ill from eating two small chocolates.

Take the chocolates and receipt back to the shop you purchased them from and ask for a refund as they are not of sufficent quality.

On a lighter note, a friend of mine had a box of Cadburys Roses given to her and found that her favourite orange creams were missing. In a tongue in cheek way (like another poster did) after a couple of glasses of wine, she sent an email to Cadburys explaining her mouth watering at the anticipation of the orange creams and her life shattering realisation that there were none in the box. To her surprise she got a really humourous email back and a voucher to purchase a box of chocolates.
  • I've never known in my life for someone to get ill from chocolate and from 3 different searches on Google on the topic going to at least page 3 on Google confirms no one else has never got ill from chocolate like the op has.

Sorry op but this confirms what I thought before I went to Google. Op this is all in your head. You got lucky even receiving £3. Move on with your life as there is no issue here.

As above i have seearched the lifespan of chocolate and it appears to be safe to eat well past its use by date.

It can get white powder/crystals which is just the sugars.

There is very little if any moisture in chocolate so its shelf life is very long, At the end og civilisation there will be cockroaches and chocolate but at the top of the preserved list will me a big mac, nothing will eat that even though its as fresh as the day it was made. :)

    EDIT just found this... http://science.howstuffworks.com/innovation/edible-innovations/chocolate-bloom.htm

Unless it was actual mould then its safe to eat. But it wont be mouldy when inside the dest before date.

Pretty sure (99.9%) chocolate has a best before date and not a use by date.

Side note: complained to cadbury a while back as bought 6 pack of fudges for work (was 6 workers and we all took turns bringing stuff in). Total for the pack was 68p. Opened it and it only contained 5. Like others wrote a tongue in cheek email to them not expecting anything to come of it (even to buy a single at the time was only 15p) and a few days later had a letter along with a £5 voucher.

Correct, chocolates have a best before date.
  • For years its been part of our Christmas ritual to buy a large wheel type carton of Roses. They've now shrunk yet again, so I won't be bothering anymore.., they just aren't worth it.

I've had chocolate that's had 'white powder' (i.e. been past its best) on it a few times and never ever been ill. I suspect there's no connection between the two. And has been pointed out, difficult to prove now. Decide whether you will ever buy Roses again, and move on.

You did all that? Are you a chocoholic?

Nice try OP but ill from chocolate is very doubtful.

You can probably double your money by taking it back to the shop as well as complaining to Cadbury and alerting the shop would, after all, be the responsible thing to do.
