Personally, I'd leave it if you don't mind Paul. Your own journey may have changed but I feel there's a lot of useful 'hints and tips' for anyone considering similar.

Well done for suggesting this - I admire and applaud you. I know that this will be unpopular but the thread will be available if someone searches and this particular forum has more than enough 'chat' threads which are relatively unfoccused.

This is my opinion and why I only visit every so often as it has lost its focus

Worst case if you really want it closed I might copy over the "best of thread" useful posts to a new thread , maybe call it guide to part time post retirement work or guide to early retirement

  • Hi ExcelPaul

From a visitor perspective, I'd agree with Savvy Sue about keeping the thread open so others can read the useful hints and tips ... I've found the whole thread to be extremely interesting, helpful and inspiring reading as I've moved into being a 50-something who's firmly in retirement planning mode!

The thread title might say one thing and the reality now be another, but maybe that thing about it being the journey rather than destination applies here? The destination may have altered for the time being, but your money-aware, retirement planning, pension plotting journey continues, with your part-time income being part of that.

And it'd be good to hear how you're getting on!

Many people feel a bit nervous about retirement. I certainly was and was initially worried about finances.

This is a useful thread where people can see how others coped both with money and the change in status, which is inherent.

Thank you for your comments. I have decided to keep thread open until at least the end of the year and see how it it develops. I will then review again. Many thanks.

Glad this thread is still open. Having left work I am now living off the severance for 5 months before claiming my deferred TPS at 60. The money doesn't quite add up to enough though, so I may have to find some work for a couple of years at least. Not sure if part or full time, but it must be literally something just around the corner, as I don't want to spend 2-3 hours a day driving any more. It's less than a month since I left, and I don't know how I feel about it. I am getting paperwork and tidying up done that I should have done in the past, and it's nice to have freedom, but some days I can't be bothered to get out of my pyjamas. Not sure if I will get bored, but still want to do things like watch films and listen to music more. Hope you are ok excelpaul !
  • Any advice about life insurance policies please? We have some in trust but they are pretty expensive and we could do with the money each month rather than the direct debits. They run for various times until 65, 70, 80. They are for our children, who are all adults.

Bournefree in my experience you go through a bit of a wind down and then you settle into a groove sts. Am sure you will be very settled soon , it is a shock in the beginning but l love it so does my DH ! As for your insurances , do you pay a lot of charges on them? That would be my worry. Do the children need these insurances now ? You can surrender them and give them the money now if they need it . I know it won't be as much but it will free your money up for you or just had a thought how about asking the DC if they want to take over the paying for them instead of surrendering the policies? Hope you get a satisfactory resolve re them .

Many thanks Bournefree. Next week I begin my 10 month 0.26 contract at a local school teaching GCSE. Looking forward to it and have been busy in recent days doing some course planning. I have decided to work part -time for another 5 years. I will also begin a new teacher's pension scheme which in spite of the changes is still very good value. I also have a tiny and I mean tiny Lgps pension from the days I did dinner duties! I am able to transfer a value from this to my new teacher's pension which will increase its value and usefulness.
    Hope all are well.
