Everyday Ordinary Man Approaching Full Retirement at 59.

Just a little update from me. Have been asked to do two mornings a week teaching GCSE History to Year 11 at a local school. Very pleased and looking forward to it. May also carry on with exam invigilation at the other school next year too. Might also consider a little more teaching. For me at this moment in time a mix of part-time work and time out is just right. It has perked me up considerably. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Hi just to say congrats on the job offer - it's great when something pops up unexpectedly and seems to fit a gap you didn't even realise was there.
There's definitely a lot to be said for part-time work as a way to ease you into retirement yet also/ conversely as a way to help keep you enjoying work for longer - as you say it's about having a balance with time out too (especially important with school-based jobs IMHO).

I'm going to try article writing , I've had one published in the past for a specialist magazine and I'd forgotten about it . I think the niche magazines are more likely to publish decent quality articles and pay for them . Do all the donkey work for them , show sources for all photographs , video or quotes used in your work so they can sort copyright and don't plagiarise other articles . Mine was a human interest story about my family .
Write about subjects you know well , most magazines want the equivalent of 1 or 2 pages of A4 , most have contact email addresses for articles.

Hi bugslet.
My insurers were very good! Hope that your clearer when you'll be wrapping up the work!
I've tendered my resignation and have a start date early September in my new role. No one seems very clear what that role will pan out like, so it's all very exciting. Big difference will be the increased commute, but although costs to me will go up I'm hoping that the increased pay and subsequent increased pension will make it worthwhile. I have a 2-3 year timescale in mind before either fully retiring or taking my pension and doing some part time work.
I seem to have been working every weekend for months as "extras" which although the additional pay is welcome has meant I've hardly seen Mrs CRV, so I'm off this weekend as is she and sorting some of the garden out! I've got to remember to try to keep a work/ life balance!
No idea crv, from my perspective, I'm fairly relaxed now the decision has been made. Customer is clueless still.
I hope the new role pans out well - how long will the commute be then?
bournefree, hope you are enjoying yourself as I type!
exelpaul, that sounds like the best of both worlds as does browntoa's plans.0 -

Well the die is cast for you, I'm sure it will work out, speaking to former colleagues who have retired they all say "it's the best thing I ever did", even if the stress of the handover of work can be hard at times.
The commute will be 85 miles so 170 round trip, but I enjoy driving, it's the opposite way to a lot of the traffic for most of the journey, so I think it's doable and it's only 3 times a week, out of office hours. With work mileage as well I'm estimating 600-900 miles per week, against my current 500-700 per week I currently do working office hours. Winter is probably the hard bit, but we only had 3 days where the town I live in was impossible to get in/out of and if that happens while I'm at work I'll just have to stay in a Travelodge! If I'm at home I'll just have to walk to the organisations nearest office and work remotely from there!CRV1963- Light bulb moment Sept 15- Planning the great escape- aka retirement!0 -
The time is the deal breaker - that is some commute; however, if the traffic is moving, Id' be happy to do that. Mine is 30 miles, 60 round trip every day. In the morning it's half an hour in, going home around an hour, grrrr. Winter hopefully will not be too much of a trouble for you.
There is a remote chance that the customer may decide to backtrack, we will see. What actually did it for me was there insistence on having ISO9001 UKAS registered as opposed to the ASCB( I think) registered provider we have. Bonkers.0 -
Mine's currently a 40 mile return commute and anything from 0-200 miles work mileage.
I understand where you're coming from about the registration. We seem to be given new targets, ways of working and forms to complete on a weekly basis. There seems to be a corporate drive to document everything in several places and documents, while reducing time to spend doing it!
Then old ideas are recycled as new ones by the latest managers. Funny old world, in the public sector, efficiency drive after efficiency drive then we go back to the old system that was supposed to be rubbish!
Grouch over! If they back track will you carry on a few years more?CRV1963- Light bulb moment Sept 15- Planning the great escape- aka retirement!0 -
I don't think so. Originally I was aiming for Dec 31st 2020, so I've not brought plans forward a lot.
There were a couple of underhand things they did in February including shafting me for 15k (because they are incompetent I have got around half of it back already by being sneaky), so relations were not great. They think they are being business like; no, you are being a wassock, business is built on relationships and trust.
So, I'm going, I know I am. Biggest thing will be getting over being 'someone' (ours is a very small world), to being just bugslet:o
I really couldn't work in the public sector , it would drive me nuts!0 -
Well , I've had 2 job offers from casting collective , been unable to do either but it's possible.
The 2nd was a 70's job where they needed to trim my hair in period style , 2 days before I'd had mine cut very short due to the heat otherwise I would have done it (it was a major TV series)
I'm hoping to be available for the next fewEx forum ambassador

Just wondering if I should ask your opinions about whether now is the time to consider closing this thread. Soon I will no longer be fully retired as I am taking up part-time work. I looked into changing title of thread but do not think it is possible. Perhaps leave it for a while so others can read it and take advice? Any thoughts and opinions most welcome. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
