I haven’t noticed any particularly wealthy posters on the pensions thread

I retired at 60, as I’d be damned if I’d let the government take 5% of my contributions per year of early retirement!

I was having to pay %10 of my wages unto my pension scheme last going off and I just thought to hell with it , the more money I earned toward my pension would only mean me paying even more tax in the long run because I would be over the tax allowance .I have worked for 38 years and I have paid enough I tell you ....NO MORE! lol

Good luck to everybody either retired or planning like us to retire earlier than SP age!

We're going to retire from our current jobs in 2018, have a change of direction for a few years to build up some funds to carry us through to when our SPs start and hopefully enjoy ourselves more!

It is for me really interesting to read about others approach, plans and experiences I've picked up quite a few ideas and didn't know so many others have similar aspirations as us.

I’m very relieved that my pensions, occupational and state, give enough to pay tax.

I wouldn’t like to live on a sum under the personal allowance.

Wishing everyone a Healthy, Wealthy! Happy New Year

When I left teaching (yes, haven't admitted that before!) I had hoped to go back on supply when the nasty taste had left my mouth but then the goal posts moved ........ and there was a chance my pension would be reassessed or even frozen .... so I didn't go back.
It wasn't my decision to retire , it was somewhat thrust upon me but I quickly learned to enjoy the new freedom.

I would say to anyone in the UK who loves animals and is used to or prepared to talk to children in school or youth groups such as Scouts, Brownies etc, or even adults (think WI or U3A) then becoming an education volunteer with the Blue Cross may interest you. If your dog has a suitable temperament then they might qualify and go with you. I worked for the Blue Cross for about 7 years and I loved it. You are paid a travel allowance based on the actual mileage driven which you can claim, or that can be your donation to the charity.
I went to places I had never visited previously, met TV folk like Matt Baker and worked on the charity stand at Crufts and Discover Dogs many times, oh , and spoke to over 11k children locally!!.

Assistance charities such as Medical Detection Dogs & Dogs for Good also welcome speakers to spread the word about their charity.

You might have an animal shelter near you where dog walkers or cat cuddlers are needed- I don't sadly

When I first started I used to do house cleaning which paid my voluntary stamp and I also tried selling books with DK- think that scheme has folded. Then I started voluntary work with the Blue Cross & PAT dogs.. and now I make things to sell for Dogs for Good .
    Where does the time go???
Hopefully more cruises and trips to my Irish house for 2018 as well as cuddling my 2 Trailies!!

Have a wonderful year... and make sure you plan some extra special treats

  • Just a quick update.

Been retired for 3 weeks now, and it just gets better every day.

Currently cleaning, decluttering and decontaminating our house ahead of our move back to Blighty. Given away so much stuff to charities, (400 + books,) it's not true. Amazing what you collect along the way, then just ignore for many years!

Quiet new years for us, then up to Sydney for the final Ashes match on Jan 4th. Furniture cleaners coming on 8/1/18, shippers coming on 10/1/18, flight home booked for 16/1/18.

A mate in the UK is buying a car for me, (with my money,) I hope to be ensconced in our house on the 18/1/18. Dogs coming over on 6/2/18, wife flying over in April once I've had some building work done.

    All go eh?
