Need help on buying a civic guys :d

Hello peeps. I would be grateful if u wonderful people would help me on my civic purchase. After countless researching, i have concluded to buy Civic for my motorway commutes. My initial budget was up to 9k to buy VW golf or similar car. But after many threads, people concluded me that for my 3 year commute ( 100 miles daily for 4 times a week) i would be better off not investing on that much of money. Since il be overusing the car, so instead, it's worth investing on older and cheaper 3000-5000'ish diesel car. So after research, i have made a decision to buy civic since i have been hearing good things about the reliability of honda engines even after high mileage.

Can you guys please help me choose the perfect civic. I am still confused whether it'd be better if i buy 1.4 or similar petrol or direct 2.2 diesel. I am 22 years old holding my license since age of 18, so insurance should be relatively low. So far, i've seen good mileage of 55000 mileage/ 2.2 diesel/ 2010 models from £5.5k.

My journey will be 5 minute of city and then 1 hr of pure motorway and 5 minute of dual carriageway until i reach my destination and vice versa.

Note: i have Seat leon in back of my head too but it seems like a unknown car to know much about. Civic seems like a good powerful reliable car which i guess would be safe for a newbie like me.

Many thanks guys, i will hugely appreciate your feedbacks

  • With four years no claims your insurance shouldn't be too bad. But at 22 why are you buying a pensioners car?
  • Make sure you change the oil on a regular basis and only use quality oil.
  • what do u mean by pensioners car. Sorry, im completely clueless about all these matters. I just drove toyota aygo for 2 years without doing any paper work anything because my dad did all of it.

It's a Honda, as driven by old folk.

It's boring and driven by old people! However old people have been driving for years so know a thing or two so buy on value and reliability, which is what you should do - hence a Honda. Walt is pulling your leg.

    I'm an old folk & I can't get in a Civic. That's why I drive a CR-V.

Which one to buy? Whichever you like, the petrol fans will tell you diesels are the work of the devil (which is true) & diesel fans will go on about economy but not mention all the rubbish coming out the exhaust.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

I drive a 2009 Civic 1.4 as my daily driver, I'm pretty sure on that commute I could average 45-50 MPG (in summer, 40-45 in winter). It replaced a 1999 1.4 Civic and both were (are) ultra reliable, no big bills in eight years total ownership.

Current car won't win any races but it handles well and can be fun to drive hard if I want to. It's extremely comfy for me as well, I drive a 450 miles round trip to Scotland fairly regularly and always get out feeling fresh. Recently did Leeds to Heathrow and back in under eight hours and averaged 53 MPG (calculated, not the 56 the car computer told me).

I'm sure you could get more MPG in a diesel but the clutches take a battering from the torque and cost up to a grand to replace, that coupled with higher servicing costs makes the 1.4 a great alternative. £125 tax isn't bad and it's cheap to look after.

Yes they do have a certain image but in my opinion the 06-2012 models are great looking, took me ages to find the spec I wanted in the colour I wanted but I'm glad I waited and still love the car.

The obvious compromise would be the 1.8 petrol and would cost somewhere in the middle to run.

    I doubt you'd regret it.
  • Thank you for your feedbacks. I did not expect the heated debates :P. I think 2010 model looks fine. As long as it dont look like KA or skoda, im fine haha. Obviously i would love to drive some type R models or some monster revving cars. But, i just want a decent car for fuel economy for my commutes.

Is honda civic only driven by old people? i swear i have seen more young people to old people drive civic or is it sarcasm lol.
  • But guys seriously... which one to buy? haha. I just want a car which will be reliable and economy for my commutes. As long as it isnt as tedious as Toyota aygo (which was also quite decent tbh except for hilly rides).
