Great thread, very thought provoking. Love reading about the science behind a crash. I would hope that the airbags in my 17 year old car are as good as the day they left the factory but hope never to find out.

OP- you should write to Honda to pass on your thanks to the engineers, include some photos of the crash if you have them, I can only imagine how proud this would make them and spur them on to keep developing even safer cars, it sounds like you owe your life's to their excellent work. I'm glad you both were okay after the crash!

Airbags in most vehicle are the same for the entire life of the vehicle and generally last much longer than your mentioned 10years. I like most would expect a 15-20 year old cars airbags to work like they would on a 1 year old car
Airbags certainly used to have a stated 10yr service life - I've had vehicles with visible warning stickers stating a date (10yr from manufacture) for the airbags to be changed. That seems to have been phased out in the mid '90s, though.
