As for the insurance! Another lesson learned. But who reads and in some cases understands all the small print? I like a lot of people I have spoken to, would expect the policy sold by Jet2 to be fit for purpose and to cover me for this type of incident. I was even asked by the Jet2 duty manager at Manchester if we had insurance, and when I confirmed that we had theirs she reassured me that we would be okay, however I know she isn't responsible for ever part of the business and was only trying to put our minds at ease.

The insurance company themselves told me over the phone that I couldn't claim as I wasn't covered for this type of curtailment, yet I submitted the claim and they processed it only not paying out due to the policy excess. This for me just fuels my suspicion that insurance companies are con artists, very happy to take your money but create or find any loophole or reason not to pay out.

Insurance companies are not allowed to bury important policy features in the small print. If there is such a big difference between what you thought was covered after looking at the advertising material that made you decide to take out that particular insurance policy, and what turns out to have been covered, then a formal complaint (to the insurer's complaints team and if necessary to the ombudsman) should succeed in recovering enough to cover your financial loss.
  • Something doesn't make sense. Your excess was £150 per person so £600 total, but your holiday cost £2800. You're saying that they only didn't pay out because of the excess? That's obviously incorrect because the Rock insurance policy Jet2Holidays sell covers up to £3500 per person for cancellation/curtailment.

Not sure why you think the policy isn't fit for purpose? Did you read it before you took it out? Did it suit your needs, because it is 100% your responsibility to make sure you buy one that does. Even after you bought it you had 14 days to cancel it if it wasn't suitable.

Your claim would be for cancellation, not curtailment, as you hadn't left the UK and your holiday hadn't commenced. So no, you wouldn't be covered for this type of curtailment.

I would thought it would have been delayed dperature. Having said that, there are a lot of policies out there that don't cover delayed departure from the UK, only coming home, I'm not familiar with the Jet2 policy, maybe it wasn't covered.

It's not buried. On the first results screen you reach it gives the cover amounts and the excess amounts per person. This is unfortunately a case of the buyer not even reading the fundamentals of the policy.

OP said they were £600 out of pocket. I assumed the insurer has paid out.

Sorry. My bad. To be honest I've read the OP a few times, but it's so wordy that I end up just skimming it.

If the insurer has paid out the policy was fit for purpose then, nothing hidden, no loopholes, not con artists, the OP just didn't bother to read it properly either before buying it, or after they'd received the insurance documents. It's quite clearly stated what the excesses on the various sections are. It's a cheap insurance hence the high excesses.

Seems like half the people on here have never boarded a plane while suffering from a cold.....done it 3 times myself as I had to (didn't want to, I wanted to be in bed) and no-one has batted an eyelid on BA, BMI or KLM.....

There's a difference between having a cold and throwing up on the floor while waiting to board!

A cold is one thing, but if there was any suggestion of something like the norovirus, that's a different matter. With a cold you're not advised to stay off work, or school because it's so infectious.

Funny thing is, when I have a cold I don't puke all over the departure lounge. Maybe it's just me?
