Clutch replacement cost

Options
Hi,

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to cars, but I think I need to replace my clutch. At least that's the advice my father gave me.

My car is nothing special: http://www.ukvehicle.com/NJ06ULU/

Does anyone have a rough idea of the cost I should expect to pay at a garage for this, assuming that's all that is wrong with it? It looks like the price for one is around £50, so assuming labour at around £10 an hour or so would £80 seem about right? I've read elsewhere it takes around 3 hours to provide the service.

Thanks in advance.

Suspect you are going to struggle to find a garage that charges £10/hour for labour...if you do I would be very cautious about letting them work on your car,

Best bet is to phone a couple of garages and ask them.

Cheapest garage around me (that I trust) is £35 an hour. The clutch is cheap, fitting it is not!

Not very realistic. Around £350 I would have thought, VX charge £429.

If that's the going rate then does £105 sound right for labour, plus cost of the replacement at around £50?

What would you imagine would make it cost that much?

That depends on labour in your area, the car you want the work doing on and possibly a number of other things.

Just ring some local independent garages and ask for quotes.
  • Labour rates are quite location dependent, around my way independent garages start at around £50/hour + VAT. Main dealers a lot more than that.

I can't imagine anywhere charging £10/hour. It's not just one bloke's wages (which will be more than that anyway), it's the premises, the equipment, insurances etc etc etc.

  • I agree I may have assumed too low a labour rate!

As for price, I have called around a few garages now and they all say "bring it in and we'll price it for you". I appreciate it may be hard to price it, given they don't know exactly what's wrong, however this is why I was asking on here so I can go armed with some expectations to ensure if they do give me too high a price that I can walk away.
  • Has the OP's post been in the ether since 1964 and only just arrived at MSE servers, £10 an hour indeed.

    6/10 for trolling effort.

Why do you think you need a new clutch?

There would be some benefit in taking it to a trusted garage and getting them to diagnose the fault. What if you get the clutch replaced and it does not fix the fault? In any case they will give you a price ... you should be under no obligation to use them.
