I bought all mine on eBay :-D

    - a Rover Metro for £200 (sold 1 yr later for £350)
    - a LHD Toyota Paseo £600 (valued at £2k)
    - a Japanese import Honda CRX £2.5k (valued at £3k)

snap, ive bought 2 motorbikes of ebay at over £2500 each, both were a fair bit cheaper than off a dealer or autotrader.

im planning on getting another car soon, i saw a merc cl500 go for £3500, it was missing 20k service history, but hey 5 liter engines are pretty tough and they start on autotrader at £5-6k.

finance wise, you can pretty much bump into people on the street trying to give you credit cards with 0% introductory rates and balance transfer rates, you should be able to get 6k no probs.

that said banks still throw money at people, i doubt they would refuse you a loan if you go to them and explain you are a self employed contractor with no accounts yet, looking to borrow X amount, if you are at all worried do it at the end of the month when their sales targets are up and the will probably fudge any needed figures.

I cant get a loan due to poor credit score (too many searches) and I am a temp. I am able to get HP though. I would prefer HP as they are quite flexible with early settlement unlike some loans

The AygoC1/Pug 107 is a modern equiavalent of something like the original Mini or 2CV. It enables up to 4 people to go from a-b very cheaply. New from £5,500, Group 1/2 insurance, £35 tax, servicing less than £100 and 45+ mpg. Not the best for motorway runs, but for my wife's needs of trips round town and picking daughter up from nursery it fitted the bill perfectly.

I have looked into the cost of a Ford Fiesta on various sites and got the following info:

    Broadspeed:
    1.2 Style 07 @ £6799
    1.2 Style 06 @ £6499
    1.25 Zetec 05 @ £6199
    1.25 Zetec Climate 06 @ £7199

    Drive The Deal:
    1.25 Style 05 @ £5995
    1.2 Style 06 @ £6995
    1.2 Zetec 05 @ £6695
    1.2 Zetec 06 @ £6995
    1.25 Style 07 @ £7400

    Motorpoint:
    1.25 Zetec Climate 07 @ £7199
    1.25 Zetec 07 @ £7299

    Deal Drivers:
    1.25 Style 07 @ £6893
    1.25 Dtyle Climate 07 @ £7355
    1.25 Zetec Climate 07 @ £7608

    Jam Jar:
    1.25 Style 07 @ £7420

Based on the above info, would you buy new or used?
  • Lucy, in your list you aren't comparing conditions of sale, so the prices aren't true comparisons. The list of price research you've done is using a mix of suppliers with different sale conditions, some you have there will be brand new 1st registered owner and you can buy straight from the main franchised UK dealer, others may be pre reg' (and some of those may have months of logbook retention which may affect your insurance) or nearly new (one may even be imports).

The mix of sellers you've looked at offer different types of sale...so you need to compare 'apples with apples'....i.e. all used, or all new 1st owner, or all whatever other form of registration process you're happy to accept - and compare WITHIN those categories, otherwise you cannot compare real value.

Also decide WHO you want to buy from (i,e hand your money to), a normal UK main dealer (at least two of those named in your list enable this to happen), a car supermarket/reseller, or a broker who requires you to pay them and not the dealer...there are many ways of doing it, but all with different impacts on you, the customer.

Also, most deals will finish next Friday as most mfr's run their deals in calendar quarter's so if you aren't buying and taking delivery in the next 5 days (the end of the quarter is next weekend!) you'll need to re-check pricing after 1st October for any changes. Ford & Toyota give themselves options to change on the 1st working day of each quarter, Citroen change on the 1st of every month.

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks for that

I am a bit wobbly when it comes to this!

Drive the Deal works directly with the dealer doesnt it?
  • Yes, as do we. Your deposit and balance and dialogue are directly with a normal main UK dealer....all as you'd do with your local dealer..except we partner you with a dealer giving higher discounts and they deliver to your door.

As brokers like us and the other one you've mentioned move high numbers of orders direct into small numbers of main dealers we get large discounts...and individuals like yourself can jump onto those discounts and still have a direct normal transaction with a main UK dealer...Just like using a mortgage broker to find you the best mortgage, a 'proper' car broker will find you the best car deal and then put the dealer in touch with you if you want to go ahead.

As it says on our website, you aren't buying online, you're buying normally from a brand dealer and we simply put you in touch! We are recommended by MSE and have permission to post on here since May 06.

You're only 'buying online'; if you are concluding part or all of the transaction over the internet, and you don't with us. You are just using us to get the quote and then you do it all direct with a normal dealer, not us.

There's loads of different ways of buying but all come with varying conditions (and some brokers charge fees so be careful)...so you need to decide how you want to do it and then check best prices within the sellers that offer your chosen purchase method.

Further to what Deal Drivers is saying, I just noticed that Drive The Deal give 12 months tax with new cars and Deal Drivers only 6. So even though Deal Drivers is cheaper, take the tax issue into account. On the example I looked at, it still made them cheaper though.

I have never heard of Deal Drivers before, but have just ordered a Zetec Climate 1.4 Fiesta through DTD who I have only heard good things about. I ordered through DTD on Wednesday night and it says they should ring to confirm the order in 2 - 3 days but still not heard from them

Now I notice that the price has gone up on their site so I hope they stick to the lower price with me since thats what it was when I ordered. Will report back on my experience as it goes on... if anyone buys from Deal Drivers can they report back too, i'd be interested to hear how it goes in case my Drive The Deal order falls through.
