Payment of £86.22 in but don't know who from?

Options
Last week a payment was made directly into my bank account within a reference that makes no sense to me and for the amount of £86.22.

I'm a regular checker of my online account and I noticed this straight away as I am not due any incoming payments or amendments to ones I am expecting soon. I rang Halifax who said they have nothing other than what's on my screen, just try again in a few days as it may have been requested back from whoever put it there. Rang again today and they said still no clue! I've wracked my brain as to what it might be but I can always account for everything coming in & going out. I asked if it was spent what happened if whoever paid it in realised the mistake (if it is one) and asked for it back. She said sometimes this happens & can be requested back but it's not always paid back.

Just looking for opinions or advice as to what I might have forgotten? It just such an undeterminable reference so gives no clues. I have trying googling it to no avail.

Thanks for reading!

  • Probably sent to you by mistake. If requested back by the sender, I believe that you would be asked to consent to it being returned. Ethically, you would obviously agree to this. If I were you, I wouldn't consider the money mine (yet), you are just looking after it.

I don't plan on doing anything with it other than holding it temporarily as knowing my luck the day I spend it is the day I'll get asked for it back! My bank have said it is a company rather than a person but still can't match up the reference. Just frustrating!!

  • Could it be from HMRC? They sometimes send repayments of tax due to your bank account without sending you an advice note, or not straightaway. The reference on the payment would be your tax reference. Other possibilities: your local council (repayment of council tax), a cancelled subscription which you've overpaid, a return of overpaid insurance premium.
  • Is there no reference bar a number on the entry into your account ?
Also I would not consider spending it at all until you know for sure that it is indeed yours to do so, Lets say you pay into a wrong account and then requested it back via similar means as the Company that could have paid you this in error ! , You would expect it to come back to you much as the Company here if this was a genuine mistake should be getting this back from you.

Most Dad's come from husbands account. I've checked tax with work & no changes Hattie625 but thanks.

The reference is just a mx of letters & numbers, the bank said the can often recognise a bit in it which is a giveaway as to where it's come from but not this time? . As I think I said, I'm holding onto it, by that I mean keeping it "separate " whilst still in the account iyswim so it's there if/when asked for it back. I'm happy to post the reference if you think it would help?

  • Try and put the reference into Google and type account payee reference, You may find a match as to who it is from and if so can look into it further your end, If it was two letters at the beginning and the 6 numbers followed by another letter then that could be a national insurance number.

Mine is JE 000000 D , The zeros are different numbers but I will not obviously add my full NI number online on a forum.
  • I sent it to you by mistake. I'll send you my details so you can send it back.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

Tried your suggestions thanks but they've not worked- its way to long to be an ni number & looks unlike one in format anyway. I've tried breaking it down into bits and searching the separate sections also but still no joy.
