I didn't know you shouldn't wash cast iron either. The only thing we don't wash is stuff that's still attached to the electrical part - like our new lean mean fat grilling machine, and we were surprised at how easily that cleaned.

I second the rub with salt. I then rinse the pan in hot water only - no soap/detergent.

Put it back on the heat with a little oil. Heat gently, remove. Then wipe with kitchen towel.

Non-one's yet said why you're not supposed to wash these things.

    loops

I bought mine in Tesco, it was only £9.99, looks very like a very expensive one and works a treat. Try your nearest Tesco Extra and get one whilst you can, they sold out in my Tesco pretty quick, but I got one before they did. Good Luck :D

They need to build up a protective layer of oils/carbon to stop food sticking to them etc and using detergents to clean will cut through that and you have to start over from scratch again :)

Same with non-stick pans etc too, they shouldn't really be washed with detergents and I usually find wiping out with damp kitchen roll is sufficient, or for dried on thick sauces I'll use hot water and a sponge, but no detergents.

Whatever you do DON’T put them in the dishwasher.

I had a really good cast iron one which I was just starting to get a nice coating on when Mr Pennywise decided to stick it in the dishwasher as it was all greasy. It came out all rusty  . I have had to scrub all the rust off with a dry sourer and re-oil it all and hide it from Mr Pennywise ;) .

I've had my Le Creuset griddle pan for 11 years and I always give it a gentle wash although my manual dishwasher insists on soaking it despite my cries of anguish. Anyhow it works OK and like other people have said I brush the food with oil.
Not bragging about having a posh pan lol. We went on a coach trip to France and bought it there along with a casserole dish, they were b****y heavy but cheap.

Aren't Le Creuset things enamelled or something anyway? It's the plain black cast iron things you need to "cure"...

Read somewhere that washing with plain water is OK, but not detergent/soap of any sort as that attacks the protective grease layer.
