I don't want my insurance to go up higher because of this.
Unfortunately for you, it will. You have to declare a not-at-fault incident for the next five years.

You've got his plate, so get his insurance details straight from http://askmid.co.uk/ and claim straight from them. There is a strong chance he will deny any involvement, of course...

But the offender will have a police record for life.

Yes, Criminal Damage is a Criminal Offence so obviously they will get a Criminal Record should it get that far, I didn't say otherwise.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

Not sure his insurer would cover it as technically it wasn't an incident involving the TP's vehicle. It's criminal damage plain and simple.

OP< you'd have been better off just parking up and walking into the supermarket rather than getting involved in a "chase" round the car park.

Exactly what I was thinking. The guy punched the car. Insurance doesn't cover that surely!?

I guess that's why you pay insurance. Whether the guy is fined and any damages awarded to the OP is a separate matter.

Surely you did something to anger him? I can't see why him cutting you up would cause such a reaction.

Their insurance may cover the damage.
Many policies provide cover for vandalism which is basically what this is and if covered, a claim might not affect their NCB but in all likelihood will have to pay whatever their excess is.

    Direct line for example state:
    Our vandalism promise

If you make a claim for damage to your car that is a result of vandalism, which is damage caused by a malicious and deliberate act, you will not lose your No Claim Discount.

These days it's almost impossible to protect your car from being vandalised. If you're a victim, our vandalism cover comes as standard and now preserves your no claims discount. And we won't just repair the damage; if you go to one of our recommended garages, we'll clean your car inside and out too. After all, it's not your fault if you're a victim - so why should you suffer twice?

    Conditions
    •You pay the excess
•The incident is reported to the police and assigned a crime reference number.
•The damage has not been caused by another vehicle

Comprehensive cover usually would "blanket" cover "damage" to the insured vehicle.

Apologies, I meant the guy who punched it's insurer wouldn't cover the damage to the OP's car.

Well if that is the case the OP ought to be able to claim his/her excess back from the 'TP' as an uninsured loss.

Yeah, probably at 50p every two weeks and he'll only pay once.

If claiming against your own insurance I'd agree but the TP insurer wouldn't be interested surely.
