If your partner suddenly stops returning your calls and acts suspiciously around you, then you know something is up.

Its the same with banks. If they suddenly freeze all your accounts, you obviously know something is up. So what difference does it make if a customer is told if they are suspected of money laundering or not? Surely the law should change on this?

The problem I have with that is no-one is actually entitled to a bank account at any bank. It's not a legal requirement. Banks can offer us an account if they want to, close it when they want to and freeze it when they want to. If we don't agree with their actions we are free to enter the long drawn out process of the Financial Ombudsman.

Yes, and that is a major part of the problem. Given that everyone is paid via a bank account, and we are all more dependent than ever on having banking facilities available, it's long past the time when at least a basic bank account should be a right afforded to everyone. The electricity or water company can't disconnect you, and must supply you if you require it; the same should be true of the banks.

Wrong. Under the EU Payments Account Directive, consumers legally resident in the EU have a right to open and use a basic bank account. Illegal use of a bank account does, however, forfeit that right.

It's a criminal offence to do nothing if you suspect money laundering is taking place.

    .

"Reasonably suspect" or "have grounds for suspecting" surely, not just suspect?

The law allows a wide interpretation of responses in different circumstances, but the underlying basis is that any suspicion or action has to be reasonable in the circumstances.

So that must mean that I can go off to Lloyds Bank or Santander or HSBC or wherever and demand a bank account because me getting one is a legal requirement and my right and if they don't give me one I can take it to the Financial ombudsman or even to a court of law and sue them? Highly doubtful isn't it.

In any case the document you link to is a consultation document of the EU, EU law will soon be irrelevant in the UK and U.K. Basic Bank Accounts have already been revised.

    Try again ROFL.

The PAD has been fully implemented in the Law of all UK nations now, and just about all banks have been offering basic accounts to all legal residents (unless they have CIFAS markers due to fraudulent behaviour) for several months already.

When you have finished rolling on the floor, you could go and find the URLs for the legislation if you want to be helpful.

I'm still rolling on the floor ROFL.

I can do better than that. I'll nip off to HSBC and demand a basic bank account because it's my legal right to get one and they have to give me one or else! ROFL PMSL

So my account is still frozen, can't do anything apart from login to online banking.

Having to scrape money from friends to eat and go to work. Can you imagine if I had a mortgage and 4 kids.

    This is so bad!!!

So what transactions have you actually made? Just transferred some money from your Lloyds savings account to your Lloyds current account? Have you triedto transfer money out to an external source from there (before the block) or had money transferred in from an external source?

Yes had £300 transferred to me from a friend who has owed me money, got 5k back from a deposit I paid from a rented property. All normal and legit.
I'm sure people do worse plus isn't that what a bank account is for? Sending and receiving money
