I have attended one wedding with ushers, but they didn't seem to do anything at all or have any jobs as such to do
The opposite of what you know...is also true

We've got a Best Man. Haven't got further than that,

It seems like a lot of people to me, but then again, we don't particularly care where people want to sit.

I'm totally with you. I have tried hard to think of all the weddings I've been to and whether a church wedding or hotel the order of services were on the chairs and you sat where you wanted - and you could get a nice view :rotfl: there was no seating plan.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

Often ushers aren't essential but a way to include close family and friends into the wedding party by giving them a role and acknowledging their importance to the couple.

oh I'd forgotten husband was invited to ush at his brother's wedding- give out order of service etc.

Meant he had to go get ready somewhere else, herd people about and generally I didn't get to spend time with him until the reception
  • I've been to a wedding with two Best Men, one with no bridesmaids, one with 10 bridesmaids; there is no rule as long as you're happy and everyone who wants to be involved has a little job.
    They are an EYESORES!!!!

In my experience, a seating plan isn't usual but being asked bride or groom and then being ushered to one side of the church or the other is.

I'm going totally off topic here and isn't aimed at answering the op, buzz is just a general question.

How do you pick which side of the church you sit on, if an usher usually does this, does the usher fill up as they go? I usually just sit whatever, on whichever side.

I'm thinking back to my wedding and everyone was mixed too. Family sat both sides, I think dad was sat next to mum on my right facing the registrar but I think my brother sat on the left to get a better view.

I stood to hubby's right and I know I looked over at my DD and she was about 3rows back as she said she liked the back of my dress ha ha. So we were all well spaced out.

  • I believe the tradition is bride's family and friends on the left (looking forwards) and Groom's on the right. At least that's what everyone seemed to do at our wedding! Have no idea whether they were told to or not...

OP - it really doesn't matter how many you have, as long as you do what you want :) We had 3 bridesmaids, a Best Man and 2 Ushers - worked out nicely with matching numbers, and including the friends we thought should be included.

i just got married and we had - 3 best men (he couldn't choose), i had one bridesmaid (originally was two but well, let's just say i had to let her go :/). My friends two little boys walked me down the aisle . Do what feels right and pick the people very carefully as you can't go back on it!
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men
