I am trying to help some friends use their own e mail domain address with a ‘free’ e mail provider with POP so it looks as though their e mails are being sent from their own domain name e.g. myname@mydomain.co.uk
I have done this before with gmail but the ability to set up an alias e mail address has been discontinued for new customers.
I thought that Yahoo also offered this facility but having just set up a Yahoo account for them when I go to the section where I thought it was possible to set up an alias (Settings, Acccout, Click on e mail address) the option is no longer there.
Have Yahoo also discontinued this service for new customers? If so, can you recommend an alternative provider to help achieve this?
Thanks.

Still works just fine with GMail.
edit: ok apparently as a "new user" I'm "not allowed to post links". So if you manipulate the text below into proper links, that will solve it. Strange forum.

Who is this "‘free’ e mail provider with POP"?
1. POP is crap
2. who's SMTP service (the sending service) do your friends expect/think they will use?
(Google's offering is a bit complicated now; you used to be able to use Gmail's SMTP service for non-Gmail domain emails but now you have to use the non-Gmail domain SMTP serivce)If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0 -

Gmail allows you to use their SMTP to send "on behalf of" any authenticated domain, as per my links above (your email will come from joepublic@gmail.com on behalf of joe@joespersonalemail.com).
If you don't want to have "on behalf of", then yes you have no choice but to use your real SMTP, or set up your own SMTP relay if your domain host doesn't provide free SMTP.
But I think nobody cares about "on behalf of", it's just a display thing.0 -

You just need to register a domain name, then set up email forwarding to any free provider -- it doesn't matter which one. You'd use your ISP's SMTP server for sending mail. No need for any "sent on behalf of" messages.
And, as above, IMAP would be better than POP for receiving mail.0 -

These are for setting up via another SMTP server - gmail used to allow you create an alias without the need for this.0 -

I the past I have set up an alias for relatives on both gmail and yahoo (both free accounts) using their respective SMTP services. You were able to make it look as though you were sending directly from your own domain. These accounts are still up and running without any problems.0 -

Yes, thanks. I was trying to avoid the 'sent on behalf of' but looks like that isn't possble.
Having just checked the gmail account I can't even see how to set it up even with the 'sent on behaf of' doh!
Has anyone any suggestions re Yahoo or an alternative that could be used?0
