Where to go in Europe in Sept?

Options
I will be traveling alone.

No to beach holidays. More cultural. Been to Andalusia, Spain and Tuscany plus Rome Italy past two years. Both been coach holidays.

I need to look for inspiration this week as been given my holiday form for next year, which needs to be handed in on Friday

Croatia-Slovenia perhaps, do you want to book something with a tour operator or DIY?

Florence for culture, but then I'm biased.:)
It's a living museum and birthplace of the Italian Renaissance.
Fly into Pisa -the railway station is about 50'yards away then train to Florence Santa Maria Novella( smn) station.Simples.

The new Pisa Mover shuttle train from Pisa Airport to Pisa Centrale station wasn't finished when I was there in October, it was a shuttle bus, worth checking before you book a flight to PSA.

Vueling does flights to FLR from LGW, it's a bit of a 'Cancellado' airline though, particularly if there are poor weather conditions at FLR meaning their aircraft are too big when full to take off and land in such conditions.
BA and CityJet fly from LCY to FLR.
Ryanair sometimes has very cheap flights to Bologna BLQ.

A week in Malta could cover a lot of the culture and history.

    3 hour flight from LGW.

I'm there now enjoying the warm autumn sunshine.:)

    Lisbon and Oporto?

Or if you liked travelling with a group, how about a river cruise?

We just did this! Flew into Pisa, then train straight to Florence for 3 nights, then on to Venice for 2, and back to Pisa for 2 nights

    Lucky you!

I had a week in Malta last autumn and it was amazing. We bought one of the weekly bus passes and got all around the island on it. There's so much to see and do. I'd certainly recommend it.

Another option if you liked a coach holiday is to do an escorted tour with Riviera holidays. The Cultural Spain one is great (although you'll have been to those sites I expect) but family and friends have done others and recommend them.

You don't say whether you enjoyed your previous holidays, and if so which of them you preferred. Anyway, assuming that they are examples of the kind of place you like:

I loved Andalucia, and am tempted to say that there is always more of it to explore (the great cities of Sevilla and Cordoba; the famous like Granada and Ronda; the less-known but spectacular like Jaen and Ubuda; small and lovely like Cazorla (with its national park) and Antequerra; not to mention Cadiz... And some years later I had to go to northern Spain and found that I loved Barcelona just as much, as well as Burgos and the mountains along the narrow-gauge railway line that goes up from Lleida.

In terms of Italy, one of my long-standing wishes is to fly into Naples (interesting in its own right) and explore the ruined cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Nearby Sorrento is famed for its beauty
