Halifax credit card credit limit £100 - balance now £450 without spending anymore!

Hi
Not sure if I'm posting this in the right place but I have had a Halifax credit card for about 10 years, it started with a credit limit of £250 which was reduced to £100 about 2 years later. I have not spent anything else on it and due to financial difficulties over the last few years have fell behind with payments, however my balance is now £460 which seems ludicrous? Can this be right? Is there anything I can do about it to appeal? Any advice. Gladly received , TIA :)

Interest and charges ? Sounds about right if you've ignored it for 10 years. You could appeal to Halifax but they might feel it's a bit late now.
  • Hi thanks for replying, I've not ignored it - but payments have been a bit sporadic over the years

Have you missed making the minimum payments regularly? They'll add hefty missed payment fees. Have you checked your statement?

    Check your statement.

You have probably incurred over limit & late payment charges which are £12 each, so £24 a month plus interest.

This should all be detailed on every statement though.

  • Thank you , might I be able to reclaim these charges? Or not? Sorry bit of a novice with this?

Probably not, but I would definitely ring them.

Explain you are in difficulties. Ask if they can stop the charges. They may refund one set of charges but I cannot see them doing 10yrs worth.

Ideally, you should have rung them when you first had difficulties but hindsight is a wonderful thing with 20/20 vision.

    All the best

you could always write in or call them and ask for them to be removed as a gesture of good will however, they'll probably just turn round and say you have to pay it

What is the current status of this account? It almost defies belief that it has not been defaulted by now.
  • You've messed them about for a decade and think they should reimburse you?

    Why?
