Trump won for several reasons, no single one took him to victory, they all added up to enough.

I heard on the radio earlier this week one guy talking about charisma and Hilary's lack of it.
He said that most US presidents had a certain common man charm about them, regardless of their background and one could imagine them at a BBQ in your back yard eating a burger and drinking a beer and feeling at ease doing so.
With Hilary, it would feel like a health & safety inspection.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

No, I just don't have a one sided view as clearly you and Stator do.

Trump's campaign was heavily criticised by his own side right up until election night. It was high risk and chaotic. However his personality and style just won the day with five states being very close. Hillary accumulated more popular votes, rather than electoral colleges which determine the winner, although I think they are still counting in the more remote Republican regions.

The other Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders could have won the presidency easily if he had been nominated instead of Clinton. This would have indeed been monumental for the US since he styled himself as a Socialist.
A NBC/Wall Street Journal poll conducted in May found Clinton and presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump in a "dead heat", but the same poll found that if Sanders were the Democratic nominee, 53% of voters would support him to 39% for Trump.[157] Clinton and Trump were the least popular likely candidates in the poll's history, while Sanders received a 43% positive, 36% negative rating

Hilary won the popular vote. It was the rigged election system that chose Donald J Trump
Yes an argument that the US forefather's not wanting a state like New York to decide the Presidency could be interpreted as rigged. But on the flip side the DNC was doing everything they could to get Hillary elected. But Bernie got a nice house out of it so all's not bad.

Middle American felt left out. Trump picked up on the vibe and went with it.

I didn't (probably still don't) like Trump, but he won, and his acceptance speech was admirable (I saw a different side to him) in that he was trying to start with a clean slate, and cement divisions. These rioters are a disgrace, they should give him a chance to show what he can do, he won, so now lets see what sort of a president he can be.

Not sure why this even warrants news coverage in the UK.

Well it is news, but it is a shame that it is happening. I did like Trump's 'professional protesters' comment, I think that he hit nailed it there. Jesus! Am I actually starting to like him?

Hilary seems more like an agony aunt to me - certainly has a lot of experience with marital infidelity.
