Opinions on toyota yaris or hyundai i20
Having had a disappointing time with my mini, its time to change (there has been too many faults for my liking, its great to drive but its now out of warranty and all I can see is £££££s at the garage), Ive narrowed it down to a yaris, i20 5dr or i20 3dr. All reviews seem a little downbeat aboyt these 2 but are there any recommendations from people who own any of these cars rather than the motoring press. I do a very low annual mileage so will be a petrol rather than diesel.

I have a three years old Yaris 1.33litre petrol CVT Multidrive automatic and it has been totally faultless from day one. Only routine servicing required. (that's jinxed it now!) It was bought as a pre-registered car, with 8 miles on the clock, at a big saving on the new price.
I take reviews from the motoring press with a very large block of salt. They use adjectives like dull, unexciting to drive, dated, cvt is boring and flawed etc.. I just want something that will get me from A to B safely, comfortably and economically. I couldn't care less about being the first away from the lights, at one with the road or stuff like that. I wanted something with a bullet proof reputation for reliability and logevity. In spite of it being a French car!
It's a good motorway cruiser at 70mph and is equaly at home locally on rural roads. 50 mpg, cheapish insurance, £30 v.e.d..
I have no experience of those other cars.0 -
Thanks, the reviews always seem to be negative, the toyota is a sensible option, the hyundai seems a good buy and a few people I know speak well of the garage and the cars but not specifically of the i20.0

i20 - are those not the ones with endless clutch issues, to which Hyundai won't admit to being an issue?
There was a thread about it as well - have a read.0 -
My wife had an i20 earlier this year as a courtesy car and can only say it was one of the most uncomfortable cars we've ever experienced.
Coupled with cheap plastics, low power (1.2 engine) and poor fuel consumption I can say a Hyundai will never grace our driveway.0 -
Hyundai = white goods. The Hotpoint of the car world. Nothing wrong with them, they're just a bit 'disposable'.
Yaris is alright, looked at the hybrid before ending up with the cactus which was cheaper. What model/budget are you looking at?0 -

Same as we thought. We suffered one for 6 months.0 -
I've just got a yaris 2012 , only a small family runabout , I looked around at a few different brands for the same money and nothing compared quality wise .0

Both very good choices - just go with the one you like better for drive or styling or whatever.
My previous car was a Yaris 1.3. Served me well for 6 years and it was 8 1/2 years old when I sold it, mainly because parts were starting to wear and it would have cost me nearly as much as the car's trade-in value to do all the needed maintenance. But otherwise I had 6 years of trouble-free motoring from it
Hyundai cars are genuinely of good quality. My sister drives a Hyundai i20 and loves it. My dad has put over 100k miles on his Santa Fe in 6 years and it's still purring along.
If you're concerned about problems down the road, for reviews I like to read the Good & Bad section in Honest John's reviews where they collect good and bad reports about various car models, and actually revise the review ratings if too many faults are reported (this is why they have lower ratings for the VW Golf after a couple of years, for example)0 -
Have had several Yaris's in my family, all been good dependable cars. No experience of Hyundai.0

I'd have a Mazda2 over either of those. You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0
