What about wooden trays - this sort of thing http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/tableware/serveware/klack-tray-rubberwood-art-06410406/
He could have a few to use as fields (could paint the bottom green if you wanted) then the tray edges are his hedges0 -

I meant easily portable like his garage.
That's not flimsy, but it can be moved around.0 -

Edit; Nikki has posted above at the same time as me and her suggestion is the same as the one in my link. It seems to be available other places too, Argos for example.
Thank you!!! A Dollis house for animals!
Just what I was after!!0 -
We have a dolls house very like this one, chosen deliberately as"non-gendered" when we started fostering about 7 years ago. It's been played with by girls and boys, and sits nicely alongside Brio, farm and garage toys.

A company called 'Baba Me' do lots of lovely toys that may be suitable and a lot of gender neutral toys too.0

Just realised that might be a bit young.
He's a very bright 5.5 year old & animal mad.
Something like that, but aimed at a slightly older age range.
However it does look a bit small and therefore limited. If he's got lots of animals, they're not all going to fit in that.
I think I'd go for the diy route: either a suitcase or stacking boxes and put dividers into them which could be used for 'upright' play.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I know you said you wanted portable "like a doll's house." My 5 year old's doll house is anything, but portable! It's not the largest thing in the world, but I wouldn't think to be dragging it around the house every time she wanted to play with it.Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

(End 2021) - £131,215.25 DID IT!!!

Babipur has some nice farm buildings, like these:

I don't know if they are the cheapest place to buy but you can at least Google some of the brand names from there.0 -

I mean portable like a garage.
Sorry that's what I should have said - something for animals instead of cars, but garage-like0
