A disk wipe, format GPT and reinstall has it back to speed.....
I wonder what caused it in the first place, might be worth posting your results on the crucial forum and see if anyone there might have an idea as this just may happen again if you don't get to the bottom of it.

I'm thinking it was some sort of gradual file corruption, I'd forgotten that I'd had a couple of instances of the mouse freezing, needing a reboot to sort.
All up and flying now, fingers crossed.
Only one hiccup, installed wrong version of Oracle Virtualbox Extension pack, meaning VM's wouldn't open.
