Years ago my wife sold an item on Ebay, cash on collection. Guy shows up and offers £20 instead of the agreed upon £30. My wife says no and the guy reluctantly agrees and puts £30 on the table. My wife then offers to wrap the item so it won't get damaged, leaves the room to pick up some bubble-wrap and helps the guy wrap it. Guy leaves with the item and only then does she discover that he took back a tenner from the money he left. Some people are just scum.

All these funny stories would make a great reality TV show.

  • Sold many stuff though ebay and gumtree, had few issues but again it's stupidity and blindness of people, which does happen. Try to put as much description as possible, eg defects, condition and if the price is fixed or not. Of course there are chancers who will try to knock the price down by any possible way, but you can always say no
  • Your description of the item to be sold or given away on ANY of the platforms IME makes not a jot of difference.
A dozen high-res photo's and a full one-A4 page descrition will NOT stop the asking of what often ammounts to either pointless questions and/or questions already answered in your ad - if they could be bothered to read it.

    For me it's the time.
I shouldn't have to spend time answering irrelevent questions, nor should I listen to tales of whatever whilst trying to remove a prospective buyer who (it seems) only came for a chat because they're bored.

So most of our "stuff" now goes to charity shops.
And don't even think of starting me on outrageous charity shop prices!

I had similar selling a caravan. Guy said he'd be there at 630pm. At 730 no sign no I text no reply.

Turned up 1030pm with his wife in her pyjamas. His excuse, wife got home from work at 6 and wanted to sit down and eat before she came out. Cheeky sod then offered me £800 for a £2000 caravan. No!!!!!

Biggest gumtree crime are the people who just text a random number, if you're selling a car for £500, morons think that a text just saying 100 will temp anyone?

I hate this. I was selling a car and the price was £3995. Someone phoned and I spent a good 20 mins speaking to them and answering their questions. They asked me how much I would take for it and I told then the absolute lowest I would go was £3600. The next day I get a text saying 3000. That was it.

I'm half tempted to say yeah sure, then give these plonkers a totally wrong address.

When i was trading, i'd a bloke phoned who was some distance away (i think about 180 mile round trip for him) so he wanted all the detail and to agree a price on the phone. We agreed on £1800 which i said was the absolute minimum i would take. He said he'd be down in a couple of hours to pick it up.

Roll forward two hours and he turns up with a mate who he'd roped in driving him down to pick it up. Pulls out £1500 in £20 notes with a sort of "sure you'll take £1500 cash in yer 'and" type approach. I tell him no, £1800 was agreed, that was my minimum and there was no further negotiation. Turns out he'd no other money with him so he'd basically to get back in the car and drive home again. :rotfl: His friend didnt look too happy as they drove off...
