Selling on gumtree and timewasters

Does my head in. You're selling something and you get offers for 1/4 of whats its listed for.

I've given up selling large items now. £30 dining table. Some woman interested then she realised she couldnt collect it. So she wanted me to wait while she arrranged a van. Then she wanted to pay by bank transfrter - NO !!!!!

Jeez. Its a £30 table. I dont want to spend my weekend conversing with you the ins and outs of whether you can buy it or not.

FGS - if you want to buy something, sort out yourself, email me arrange a time, turn up and pay cash, go away end of.

Sometimes I think its easier to take it to the dump.

Dont get me started on freecycle. Tried that one too. Had people turning up and then saying sorry not what I wanted. Umm you've seen the pics - if its not what you want pass it on. Do not tuen up waste my time being picky about something thats free.

I don't see the issue paying by bank transfer... That is as good as cash!

My parents listed something for free on gumtree, and had nearly 20 people interested. They agreed to go with the first person, then kindly waited whist they sorted their van out, sorted out a date, had the date changed, and then they didn't show up!

I have something listed on Gumtree at the moment for £160, and certainly worth it, although I would take £150. Within 10 minutes I had someone saying "will give u £100 CASH m8! Collect now". Er.... I'm not sure why they think paying cash is an incentive to have the price lowered that much, as it was cash on collection anyway, and had only been listed for 10 minutes!! I politely declined.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I probably shoot myself in the foot sometimes and lose sales, but I refuse to deal with people who write txt spk. They just get binned. m8? seriously...??! if they are too lazy to write in decent English, they are going to be too lazy to come and collect is the message I'd get from that.

Gave up selling unwanted possessions on eBay ages ago. I tend to give stuff away on Freegle now - my personal rules are never to respond to anyone who asks using text speak, gives a sob story about their sick children, or expects me to phone them !

A nice polite request indicating when they can collect gets the offer ever time.

Always makes me laugh that people not only expect money for their item but the highest standards of the person buying the item.
Kettle. White. £5 ono When collecting, dress is evening or military dress. Please be prepared to give a minimum 30 minute presentation on why you should be allowed to purchase the kettle. No exceptions.

Agree with this, i put my old flatscreen silver 32inch TV on freecycle via FB last weekend. It works fine, a few years old, excellent with remote,. One guy complained its not HD, one that it didnt have freeview, and one woman asked if i could deliver(for free) 20 miles away....errr no!! Took ad down and will take to tip.

Haggling at pick up gets me. No, you offered to come round and pay £20 for the baby crib. Then saying, oh you have such a nice house, you don't need the money, can we have it for free. Er, NO. Go to free cycle. His pregnant wife stood behind him, wanting to sink into the ground.

  • I sold a washing machine on ebay for a tenner, it worked but needed the spin looking at all out lined in the ad. The bloke turns up and asks for the water pipe to connect it which I didn't have and wasn't in the listing then started to try and haggle. Told him to either pay up or leave it and go. Cheeky !!!!!! then asked me to help him put it in his car, some people!!
Nothing to see here, move along.

I had a special casserole dish-admittedly a nice one-at a bargain price-they even Asked me if I could deliver that, quite a distance .I'm afraid I was rather rude and replied" why would I?"
There's a kind of mathematical formula, the better and more bargainous the item , the worse the buyer.
    Gumtree/shpock + bargain= pita X 20

Sold a car once on ebay. Guy contacted me and said he thought it was near his house - same town name (not 200 miles). So I said look fair enough easy mistake to make - if you want to back out.

But he said no its ok I still want it I'll get a train. OK I'll pick you up. So he turns up having bought a single ticket and then tries to get me to knock £100 off because his train ticket cost him £100!

Hardly in a position to haggle! I said no but I can drop you back to the train station.

So he agreed and then asked me the way back to London! I said motorway is there - then he asked me which way west or east. Hope he got home....
