Sky & BT Sports

  • As TalkTalk say, both Sky Sports (Sky Sports 1-5 and F1) and BT Sport can be received if you sign up with them.

They will supply a TV box which connects to the TV aerial and to the internet. A TV box which will record costs a little more, it's probably worth it. Which channels come down the aerial and which over the internet is pretty much transparent, you just select the channel you want to watch and the box deals with the rest. Sky Sports and BT Sports do come down the internet though.

You need a minimum speed of 5Mb/s for that to work, so check the predicted speeds for the flat, no need to pay for fibre if you have enough speed over copper/ADSL.

With TalkTalk you may be looking at:

£29 a month for landline / unlimited broadband / entertainment package (maybe cancel entertainment after a month, save £6 a month)
£25 one-off for TV recording box
£16 a month for Sky Sports (half price right now, but it's half price most of the time!)
£22 a month for BT Sport (first 3 months free, £15 activation fee)

Note, no "free" phone calls included with that, £5 a month for unlimited landline / mobile calls.

Subscription channels provided by internet. Not a full Sky line-up of channels though.

So Talktalk have said it is £71.94 + £25.00 for box and extra for BT after?
This is an 18 month contract.
I am already a Talk talk customer.
    Does this sound right?
    Thanks everyone

£71.94 a month to TalkTalk sounds like you're subscribing to something over and above the minimum to get Sky Sports and BT Sport. I was thinking:

    "TV Plus with Fast Broadband" at £28.95 a month + £25 one-off
Sky Sports boost at £16 a month

    So, that's £44.95 a month to TalkTalk + £25 one-off.

You then can get BT Sport from the BT site, search for "BT Sport on TalkTalk". That's £22 a month to BT, plus £15 one-off.

If you're buying more TV channels, Fibre broadband or phone call package from TalkTalk then they'll charge you more, but they're not necessary if you just want the sports and some basic subscription ("Entertainment boost") channels.

You can go on to the TalkTalk site, pretend you want to join and play around with the various options to see what price you end up with!

Afterthought: Also £80 or so cashback if you order it through Quidco!

Might be worth doing the same with BT as BT Sport is from free .

I tend in these cases to work backwards . What TV channels do i want and who supplies them .
  • Yes, BT's worth a look.

They don't supply Sky Sports 3, 4, 5 or F1, which may or may not be important to you. Also, with BT, you need the more expensive, but faster, fibre broadband to get Sky Sports.

On the upside, they do offer a high definition option option for Sky Sports 1 and 2 which TalkTalk don't. They also throw in weekend phone calls as part of the standard price, which TalkTalk don't.

Looks to me that BT ends up at £52 a month + £70 one-off, rising to £60 a month once first year discount runs out. Knock £5 off that £60 if you're OK with 12MB a month usage (rather than unlimited). Add £5 a month if you want the high definition versions of Sky Sports.

That gets you landline / fibre broadband / weekend calls / a TV box that won't record, BT Sport, Sky Sports 1 and 2.

    Good luck!
