I'm not sure I'd bank on Scotland

I'd definitely look at Val d’Isère that early in the season as they have extensive snow making abilities if the weather gods fail to deliver

Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

I'd agree, which is why I proposed it as a potential last minute decision destination. It's pretty much impossible to rely on the Scottish resorts, if only because when there's enough snow to ski it often means the access roads are closed (as is the case at Glenshee today). But if they are open and there is snow and the weather is reasonable it's great skiing.

I just had my first "bargains" email - there was a massive dump of snow last night, so everyone is getting excited for the season!

    http://www.skitotal.com/deals/top-deals/

The email mentions Solden having 80cm of snow. We were even higher than Solden this year in the smallish resort of Obergugl. Worth a mention, this was the third year we flew into Innsbruck airport, but the only time we took 3 attempts to land :( - Apparently as it's so high it does have quite a high number of diversions, and the nearest airport is 3 hours further away by coach. Thank goodness he tired for the third time!!

INN is not an ordinary airport and pilots have to be qualified and experienced to fly in and out of there.

  • Thank you all. He was not impressed with the suggestion of Scotland but I will be keeping an eye on snow conditions over the season and as has been mentioned, it could be an option as a last minute trip in the future.

He has booked Val Thorens - it wasn't cheap - £830 but that is everything in, SP supplement, transfers, luggage, lift pass, ski & boots hire (he decided not to buy), ski in ski out chalet. Mixed reviews of the accommodation (self catering studio) but he is young and single so won't be spending much time there.

I have also signed up for all the suggested newsletters so next year he can do his own research. (I am just jealous as I would love to go but I can't ski and hubby says he is too old! :p )
Ditch 100 in January Challenge 100/100
Ditch 100 in February Challenge 114/100
Ditch 100 in March Challenge 100/100
Ditch 100 in April Challenge 75/100
  • That's actually a really good price for all that, especially with a single room supplement.
We usually pay between £700 and £800 for a catered chalet, then last year the lift pass was over £250. Luckily we all have our own skis and boots, as it can all add up. So for all in, I'd say well done, In the end the time spent in your room is such a tiny part of it all.

Does he have all the gear? If not Aldi have cycling thermals in at the moment which are just the same as their ski ones! I'd really recommend Merino wool items rather than synthetic. The "big name" is Icebreaker for layering, but honestly I have both, and my Aldi gear is just as good. I alternate the days I wear it.

Give a shout if he needs any advice on what to buy.

Can he ski already, or could he fit any lessons in before going if not? We are very lucky here in Norfolk, as have a brilliant dry slope (yes the only hill in Norwich!).

Late to thread but for last minute deals I have been able to get £299 for flights accommodation as single in catered chalet with 2 meals a day and free wine.
    pass £230 and boot /ski £100
His eating drinking will be expensive but he is only young once.
Make sure he has insurance and carries it on him whilst skiing or else his credit cards will be bashed for £400 or so if evacuated off mountain.
I live in NE so good luck.
Am in Val Claret the week before with 100 others for £500 in 4 star accom with lift pass and transfers included.
No flight but they are about £100 from LGW ETC

    Late to thread...

A bit too late really as he has already booked his holiday. But you make a valid point about the necessity for insurance (having been taken off the slopes with a ruined knee myself in the dim and distant past).

Recognise the tardiness but might be useful to anybody searching web.
Sorry about your knee and I hope I am not tempting fate by mentioning it.
