Late Ski Package for Single

Son (22) is looking to go skiing on the 17th December for a week by himself but we don't know where to start looking for a reasonable deal.

He can ski (went with his school for several years) and will have his own equipment but has never booked a ski holiday.

As a 'first timer' is he best booking a package, and if so what companies are there out there? And where are the cheapest or best destinations?

Oh and he is in the North East so Newcastle Airport would be the ideal although he is prepared to travel*.

Pre-Christmas is early season so look at resorts that can usually be relied on for snow
Val d’Isère or Tignes are probably the best bet in the Alps
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

At that time of the season the higher the better really. If he's happy to join in with a chalet that might have a group, or other couples, some of the catered chalet places often have bargains for odd rooms left.

Get on the mailing list at Igloo ski and Ski Beat. I seem to get lots if messages from them. But the single sullpiment on any holiday might be quite high.

We love chalets, all food is usually brilliant, and wine included at dinner!

From NCL it's Crystal ski holidays or easyJet DIY to Geneva.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.
  • Thank you all, lots to investigate. He has started travelling and using Hostelworld so the chalet idea is a good one. I suspect he has probably left it too late as he can't be flexible with his dates so he may have to plan instead for next year.

If he wants to leave it to the last minute to check on conditions then he could consider Scotland, it's already started to snow on the Cairngorms so there's a chance it could be skiable in mid-December.

If budget is an issue he should consider Eastern Europe rather than Switzerland.

Thank you, we hadn't even thought of Scotland. Just had a quick look at accommodation and he could get a 1 bed holiday bungalow for less that the price of a chalet abroad. I hadn't realised until looking on the Visit Scoland website how much skiing there is in Scotland.

  • I'd imagine Val Thorens would be ok at that time of the year due to its altitude however I've only ever been later in the season. A lot will depend on his budget as certain resorts are far from cheap.

In terms of flights most airports go to Geneve but you could also consider places like Chambery and Grenoble as budget airlines tend to go to these as well (although I'm not sure about from Newcastle).
