I think it's just a balancing act. Govt have nothing to lose by appealing and it'll make their lives a bit easier if they get it overturned.
If not then three things happen.
They can blame delays on everyone else.
They can pretty much guarantee getting a vote passed the HoC
Once parliament approve it, then its going to be hard for remain MPs who voted it through to then start criticising.
Yes, it's a balancing act. On one hand it's a win win win squared but on the other people spot they're politicking and there's the danger brexit is turned into a toxic brand.
I doubt Mrs May is as daft as the hubris filled posters here but who knows.0 -

If we accept the mayo view that all leave voters are sub-normal halfwitted nazis then they are unlikely to even know what politicking is let alone spot it going on.0 -

How are High Court judges "up to their necks in the EU justice system" when they are UK judges, who have spent their entire career in front of the UK courts, deciding a case concerning UK constitutional law?0 -

obviously you have researched their history but have not chosen to share but other readers might be interested ;
Who is the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd?
Lord Thomas is the most powerful figure on the three-man panel that delivered today’s ruling.
He serves as head of the judiciary and President of the Courts and is the most senior judge in the UK – an honour previously held by the Lord Chancellor prior to the Constitutional Reform Act 2005.
The 69-year-old was a founding member of the European Law Institute, an independent organisation with an agenda to enhance European legal integration.
He was born John Thomas in Wales and was educated at the prestigious Rugby School, before going to Cambridge University and studying in Chicago.

"He was born John Thomas in Wales."
So what does that make him ?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

The knuckle-dragger part of the leave movement are probably going to vote UKIP and the like anyway.
There's a theme running through recent pages of this thread that whatever turn the Tories take it'll be brilliant for them. If that's the case there's an opportunity for the government to accept the ruling and debate a motion in good faith in parliament and likely win.
You'd find it would go a way towards healing the division that the referendum caused.
I can't see a single reason why they wouldn't want to do this other than for political gain.0 -

Yes, I think SHE wants a snap election and a larger majority.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. India warns the UK's immigration policy could wreck any hopes of a post-Brexit free trade deal...Theresa May’s hopes of a post-Brexit trade deal with India suffered a hammer blow from Delhi as the prime minister prepared to make her first official visit to the country.
A spokesman for India’s minister of external affairs suggested that a policy brought in by May as home secretary restricting the right of Indian students to stay in the UK after graduation could prove to be a block on any progress.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”
