I have always felt that fireworks should not be on sale to the general public

A more relevant example would be banning alcohol for consumption st home and only selling it at licensed premises under tighter controls.

To be honest, not such a terrible idea, and probably what would happen if alcohol were 'invented' today rather than having been part of our culture for centuries so too engrained to stand any realistic chance of ever being banned.

I don't think being 'denied' the usually disappointing experience of slightly rubbish shop bought fireworks sputtering for a few minutes in your back garden once a twice a year is a particularly cruel thing to happen anyway!

If you have mobility problems it may be impossible to get to a display. If you have other problems, like for example being a severely autistic child and unable to cope with all that attaches to a display, then perhaps a few pretty sparklers and a couple of golden rain fountains viewed in your own garden are pretty magical. But don't worry, they miss out on so much what's one more thing. I think fireworks should be categorised, and only the lowest, non noisy, but pretty category available to the public.

I'm surprised that the pathetic, spluttering fireworks you refer to are such a cause for distress ;)

Well, that's the thing, they look crap but they're still dangerous and anti-social, so what's the point?

Nice guilt trip attempt, but do you think the hundreds of injuries each year are acceptable collateral damage?

I would never expect to guilt trip you Person-one. Obviously when I see my grandson missing out in so many areas, the thought he would have to lose just one more pleasure disappoints.

I think you'll find even organised displays have had injuries so lets just ban fireworks 100%. Much the safest option.

Far fewer, some of those are caused by people bringing their own and some are injuries sustained by people working on the displays which is of course not good but ordinary members of the public are not at much risk from the fireworks used in those large public displays.

(Oh and I did say in my first post that sparklers should be more or less the limit of what is allowed, so we're not too far away from agreement actually.)

There's a board called Campaign Corner which has a number of petitions on, that might be a more appropriate place for this.
I did warn you - the thread has been moved. :)

I think this is a fair point.

I feel the same way about proposals to ban alcohol at airports and on early morning flights because a few stupid people can't drink to a reasonable level.
I like a G&T at the airport or maybe on the plane but I don't start a riot or fall out with other passengers and make life very unpleasant for my fellow passengers and cabin crew.

Yes, it is a very fair point, but as Person One said below, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

I also don't think that people realise how dangerous fireworks are even if you are careful with them. I think that because fireworks are so freely available and relatively cheap, people have become complacent.

My husband's father used to help organise displays in their town but he would never allow fireworks in the garden because he knew exactly how dangerous they were.

You're preaching to the converted. :)
    I've signed the petition.

My point to AylesburyDuck was that I don't think we should have to have a 'nanny state' but in some cases I think it's needed.

So I agree with you about the fireworks but if someone started a petition to ban alcohol at airports and on flights, I wouldn't sign.

I guess it all comes down to whether you agree with what is being proposed in a petition or not.
