I have always felt that fireworks should not be on sale to the general public

  • im not sure about the mainland, but in NI you must have a licence to purchase fireworks (anything more than small garden fireworks), applied to Stormont about 3 weeks before the event. In theory, you then can only purchase them if you show the licence. But this doesn't stop disreputable suppliers selling them under the counter to anyone they feel like. Kids included.

the kids (12-14 year olds) in my street had been setting them off for a week in the run up to Halloween and it continued up until last night. One hit my bedroom window with such force I thought it was going to break. And my neighbours dogs have been going crazy with the noise

If so, then we can agree to disagree.

The solution to crime is not to outlaw eerything it is to appropriatly punish the offenders.

Your solution takes legitimate fun away from normal people.

Maybe you could start a petition to get apporpriate funding for the poilice force so people would not get away with it?

    Who is outlawing everything?

We have a national debt of around £1.5 trilion. And that doesn't even include the unfunded state and public sector pension liabilities which total over £2 trillion.

We are bankrupt as a nation but no-one will admit it.

I have had fireworks thrown at me. And I still don't have an issue with them. I have a small scar on my right hand from where I got burned when I had one thrown at me. And I would quite happily still say that I don't have an issue with them.

And to attempt to get a parliamentary debate over something which celebrates our heritage is a little bit too far. They shouldn't be banned; they should only be sold to to reputable organisations.

A small scar on your hand? What if it was a big scar on your face?

The petition said that they should be sold to reputable organisations.

If someone caused injury or death to me or my family with a firework I wouldn't care if they were punished as it would be too late. I want to stop it happening in the first place.

Don't be giddy, you know i was speaking of the lazy selfish people who want to outlaw something they do not care about without thinking that other people may like it.

Yes we have debt. That does not give us a free take on the shortcut of outlawing things rather than dealing with the problem.

Your idea is not a solution. It is a crude attempt at patching things and open to abuse.

What you need to do is change peoples attitudes and enforce the law.

I know this is harder though, worthwhile things usually are.

There is no simple solution that is fair to all.

Indeed yes you want your way and don't care about the rights of other people.

Yes, if they are decent, intelligent people. However, the "people" who throw fireworks at an 8 year old girl cannot be reasoned with:

The 'right' to look at some pretty lights in your own street rather than a safe, organised event?
