Thanks for your thoughts Frank - I may well have to do that but I am of the opinion one must try these things if they are to learn them; much like any other skill.

Of course some people are happy just to call someone to do menial things on their behalf, my neighbour always gets people round to tune his TV every time he buys a new one because his mentality is it's easier to pay someone to do it.

Well yes and no. Check your house insurance T&C's.

If you are going to attempt a bit of one-upmanship, at least try to get your posts correct.

Ha, no offence, but it looks like you just put wires in random holes with no regard for anything!

Just for info, here is a crappy MS paint drawing:

    http://imgur.com/a/Idk1a

The first image shows how the lights are wired, assuming they comply with regs. There is one radial circuit, and the cable goes from the consumer unit from light to light and then stops at the end.

The switches are wired from the light to the switch.

Two (or three or more) way switches are wired between the switches, only one goes to the light.

The second image, shows the actual ceiling rose. Green is earth, and should be green/yellow, but my mspaint skills are limited.

Radial in, is the power from the previous light, radial out, is the power to the next light.

Blue = black, if you have cables from pre-2004, Brown = Red.

To switch, is the cable to the switch, this does not carry a neutral (blue/black) but rather Live, and Switched Live, so for compliance you should have brown/red sleeving over the cable as shown in the image.

The left connector block (points 1-3) are for the neutral. Point 1 leads to the light bulb itself, points 2 and 3 are for the radial circuit.

The middle one is the live, all three brown/red wires should go into this.

Points 7/8 are for switched live, the 2nd wire with sleeving from the switch should go in there, as well as the light bulb itself.

Two way switched lights will be the same. The light on the end of the radial will have "radial out" missing. If you have two lights on the same switch, you may well have a spur off here going to the other light, this should be connected with the neutral (blue/black) going in somewhere in 1-3, and the switched live going in 7 or 8.

    Hope this makes sense.
  • Not quite the same problem, but hopefully someone out there maybe able to help with the problem that I have:
Am trying to 'fix' ceiling light in one of my daughter-in-law's bedroom, problem being is that there are two blue wires and two brown wires coming down from the new, modern, ceiling rose. Normally there is only one of each which makes the wiring of the light simple.
Am stuck as what to do and to compound the problem, the next bedroom light is also not working now, which makes me think that these two wires of each colour are somehow linked
Grateful for any assistance that you can give me

Very easily sorted in just one step: book an Electrician.

It's not entirely clear what you mean; although I can guess, just to be sure you mean your new light fitting has two separately powered lamps each with its own neutral and live supply? If so, you would connect it up like any other light - both neutrals to the neutral terminal on the rose and both lives to the switched live terminal.

Or are you referring to the cables from the lighting circuit?

If the new fixture doesn't connect to the existing ceiling rose and you are trying to wire everything up at the light fitting, then did you make a note of where everything went before? It's best to take a photo of these things or label the cables.

What cables have you got coming out of the ceiling to the light fixture? Do you have a photo? If the next light on the circuit isn't working it sounds like you've broken the connection on the lighting loop.
