  • Thanks for your thoughts Frank - I may well have to do that but I am of the opinion one must try these things if they are to learn them; much like any other skill.

Of course some people are happy just to call someone to do menial things on their behalf, my neighbour always gets people round to tune his TV every time he buys a new one because his mentality is it's easier to pay someone to do it.
  • Thanks, changed to regular switch but the bulbs are still dim.

    nice guy ^
  • Update: Solved it - rose #1 needed red on red and black on black for a direct connection and feed to rose #2 (spur).

Glad you sorted it. I did suspect as such which is why I suggested this :-
I would disconnect all the cables from light #1 and determine with my meter which one is live by metering between red and earth and then having proven the live one, meter between it and each of the blacks in turn to determine which one is a neutral. If only one of them is a neutral, the other one and the other red will be the switch pair.

Do I gather Herself's hopes for a candle lit meal are off?

Perhaps as you're taking her out to celebrate a new skill (& surviving the learning)?

It doesn't inspire anyone with confidence that you will have carried out a safe job when you couldn't even get that right. Seriously, you need it checked by an Electrician. And vow never to attempt electrical work again.
