    if I 'loved my child to bits' as you claim I don't think I'd take the one hurtful action which can never ever be put right.

    Why not divide your estate equally between your children and grandchildren. This way the 2nd child gets something (but not 50%) and your grandchildren (& 1st child) will thank granny for her forward thinking.
