Donna, so much depends on what you want to do with it. What games do you want to play? Also what size monitor do you have? To get good graphics on a 30" monitor takes a very powerful graphics card or two. To get good graphics on a 17" monitor takes a much less powerful card.

the one i am looking at has a 19 inch widescreen monitor. at the moment most games i fancy getting are a bit older. it is first person shooters like doom 3, quake 4, unreal tournament that i mainly want to play. i definitely dont want to play any of those strategy type games. i do like footy games but i have heard they arent as good on pc as they are on console. the problem i know i would have is that i would see some new game that blows me away and want it. i have talked about the pc i am looking at on another thread but heres the link for it again. please dont suggest dell because they are too much of a mess about.

  • Hmmm processor's fine for it but the RAM won't be high speed gaming ram (i.e corsair) and the graphics card will play Quake 4 very poorly. Fine for unreal tournament and Pro Evo 5 and earlier...

For the new unreal tournament and pro evo games, you need a much better gfx in there....

Do you know anyone that can build pc's? :)

not anyone i can trust. when looking at the range in pc world there are only a few really that are better and they are all really expensive. this must mean that they stock a really bad range of pc's if the one i am looking at isnt good enough. there is an advent t9508 with better ram but it has worse graphics.
how easy would it be to upgrade the graphics in the future and what kind of money would i be getting charged if i did?
  • pc world are good for home pc's but when you want something for games its better to be specific and get the correct bits and bobs that you're going to need really!

Look at the specifications given to me at scan.co.uk... you could subtly modify them to bring the price down, get a 19" widescreen from somewhere else like an ebay shop, and you'll get a super pc for not much more in price :)

  • I've had a friend whose parts that were ordered from scan all seemed to fail even the replaced parts failed till he got a refund and bought from another supplier(same parts) and since then no problems ?

Just bad luck ? maybe but I'm sure I'd think twice before buying from them but in fairness to them they are nearly always very competitively priced if not usually the cheapest i specced the same PC earlier with my favorite supplier and it was about £80 dearer
  • Right then, called them up.. turned out the gainward gfx they have "in stock" they cant find.. so instead of telling me, the order was on hold till they could find it.

The guy swapped the graphics card on the phone for me to an XFX model. 50p more, though a bit more overclocked.. except for that the same model. Getting that instead.

Won't make a difference perforamnce wise but at least it comes for tomorrow now. what muppets lol
