What a great thread! Thought I'd decluttered my wardrobe, but things in there are still so squashed together on hangers that I often have to re-iron before wearing. Most not worn at all (what's that 80%/20% Pareto principle?) so definitely need to have a serious throwing out session.
Have been telling myself I need more clothes for winter - but am now going to seriously try to make do with what I have a bit longer.
    Resolution:
    Think twice before spending anything!
  • I have been reading this thread with interest. I had already decided not to buy any new clothes and found I had a wardrobe full so will use these up. I got carried away last week in our local department store as 'Dash' had a sale and bought a nice blouse reduced from £49 to £24. It looks great on but for the bit of material its still expensive at £24 but is well made and should last a long time. I have a beige long line cardigan bought a few years ago im M & S sale but dont wear it as it has no buttons and a tie belt which I find uncomfortable to wear so yesterday bought some fastners and will buy snazzy buttons to go on the outside so will wear this with black trousers. Before coming on these boards I would have taken it to charity shop. Thinking of buying a sewing machine from Tesco and set about alterating some clothes instead of chucking them. My bank balance is healthy at present because of lack of clothes spending.:T

Well i'm having a sort through tomorrow. Anything which can't be Ebayed is getting put in a crate and I'm gonna get my sewing machine out and have a stab at re-inventing them as other things.

    Irish Wexford and Cazzdevil - and anyone else who's getting into clothes restructuring (nice name for it!) please let us know how you get on;

I'm trying to lose weight so may have to do a few alterations until I am small enough to buy from charity shops, most of them dont cater for big birds like me! I love the idea of recycling clothes this way and also to be able to have something completely different with a bit of personalisation.

:T Thank you, thank you, thank you to rosieben and Mariel :T

That website is BRILLIANT what a fantastic idea. You have saved me a fortune - and I like the idea of the funky coloured band as well.

I definately have the sewing skills for this and I have the sewing machine as well. I can't thank you enough. I have 3 pair of jeans that fit perfectly and I'm going to adapt these to see me though and then afterwards I'll buy myself some new pairs once I get smaller again.

    Cheers guys

Have bought some vintage knitting patterns from ebay ( 12 for 99p ), and some cheapish DK yarn for £8.00, so am all ready to start knitting - just have to find my knitting needles which I stashed away in a safe place a couple of years ago!
Am going out for a meal tomorrow night, and would normally have headed to the charity shop for a "new" outfit, instead have thought of a new way to wear some of my old stuff - the first real test of my challenge. I've received a gift token for a clothes shop, but am going to use it to get some new undies, there is no way my old ones will last the year out!
Have extended the challenge a little as my book buying habit was also getting over the top. I have decided not to buy any more books until I've finished all my unread ones and ebayed or recycled them.
It's a great idea to put away summer clothes, don't usually do this but will follow all your examples and do it this year.

Also boxed up the Christmas gifts, started packing the shoeboxes and collected all the loose hangers - do they breed?

Yes they do - I always refuse a hanger when every I do buy something new!

  • Hello, any ideas on how to swap a summer for a winter wardrobe? I feel the cold, so spend all year in the same clothes, esp at work as the air-con is usually way too cold. Basic work wardrobe for me is trousers/long skirt with strappy top and skinny-fit jumpers, and occasionally a suit. I wear the same thing week in week out, and I'm bored, but don't want to spend much more on 'work' clothes.

Home-wise, its pretty much the same thing, but with jeans and t-shirt and bigger jumper.

Help, I need suggestions for a re-vamp and for seasonal clothes. I am tall (6ft) so struggle to find clothes to fit properly that are reasonably priced!

    Thanks.

    hello DianaMattos, welcome!

Re summer/winter wardrobes, not sure what to suggest, but I always used to think that summer was a time for pale and pretty colours, pastels where winter could be darker colours. Maybe thats old fashioned now though!

Why not have a go at customising some of your tshirts and tops? earlier
